Arena: Produced by George Martin
BBC2, Monday 25 April 9:00pm - 10:30pmHe never planned to be a record producer ("I wanted to be Rachmaninov the Second"), but George Martin produced an extraordinary catalogue of music, most notably with the Beatles. This superb profile of the "gentleman of the music industry" is stuffed with rare archive footage, generous music clips and chummy chats with Macca, Ringo and Cilla as well as Rolf Harris and Bernard Cribbins. It's an incredible musical legacy but, of course, it's his recollections of the Beatles we want to hear. "I thought their music was rubbish," he says, recalling his first impressions, "but they had charisma."
