The story behind the creation of Hidcote Manor Garden in Gloucestershire, which many horticulturalists regard as the epitome of the English country garden. However, the life of its designer Lawrence Johnston was far from tranquil, and the programme explores how his vision for Hidcote was influenced by Edwardian high society, the horrors of the First World War and plant-hunting expeditions to China and Mount Kilimanjaro.
