Wonderland - Travels with My Family
BBC2, Wednesday 08 June 9:00pm - 10:00pm
Fixing cameras in cars to record what happens on long journeys might sound dull. But Zara Hayes's film is far from tedious. It uses conversations to reveal what makes four families tick. In each case, hidden dynamics emerge. It's artificial, obviously, but feels unforced. One married couple discuss what drew them together, before a brilliant editing coup springs a complete surprise. Another couple talk about giving their son, who has Asperger's, more independence - while he chips in from the back seat. And movingly, a father explains why he split up with his wife as he drives their three young sons to the Isle of Wight to scatter her ashes.
