Unnatural Histories
BBC4, Thursday 09 June 9:00pm - 10:00pm
Serengeti 1/3, series 1
Just how natural is the natural world? In this new three-parter, we'll discover how three impressive wild spaces have been shaped over time by man. In the coming weeks Yellowstone Park and the Amazon will be scrutinised, but we begin in the Serengeti. Here, we see the impact that generations of hunters, traders, scientists and tourists have had on the region and discover how an Italian expeditionary force unwittingly introduced a deadly virus to the continent that crippled the economic livelihoods of local people. It turns out it was this disease that emptied the land of livestock and allowed the modern vision of Africa as a pristine wilderness to take hold.
