The Royal Academy's eclectic summer exhibition is a ritual of the art world's year - and of The Culture Show's, too. It's the world's largest and longest-running open submission show and a moment for taking the pulse of contemporary art at all levels. Alastair Sooke reveals the machinations behind the event and explores some of the featured work, meeting unlikely Academician Jeff Koons to discuss his large-scale sculpture, Coloring Book, newly installed in the RA's courtyard.
