Kidnapped: A Georgian Adventure
BBC4, Wednesday 10 August 9:00pm - 10:00pmA short Childhood strand on BBC4 begins with a real-life tale - from the early 18th century - of betrayal, lost inheritance and enormous resilience, which went on to inspire the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Like Kidnapped's David Balfour, young James Annesley was betrayed by his uncle, swindled out of a fortune and earmarked for transportation to the Americas. Unlike David, who was Scottish and soon fled incarceration, James left Dublin and made it all the way to Delaware where he was pressed into years of servitude. He made it back to Ireland in the 1730s whereupon his foul uncle tried to have him killed at Curragh racecourse... It's a fascinating yarn spun with relish by Dan Cruickshank, even if an hour's-worth of hushed exuberance and finger flapping can become wearing.
