Downton Abbey Beats Spooks

Twice as many people watched the first of the new series of ITV1's Downton Abbey last night as watched BBC One's spy drama Spooks.

An average 4.6m viewers tuned in to watch the beginning of Spooks' 10th and final series, while 9.3m saw Downton's second series opener.

A peak of 9.9m people watched the first 15 minutes of Julian Fellowes drama, overnight figures indicated.

Overnight figures indicate that the Spooks episode on Sunday is one of its worst ratings performances since the show began in 2002.

Spooks' viewing figures have only dipped below 4.6m twice before.

Biggest overnight audience for Downton Abbey as the second series comes to a thrilling close

It faced some criticism halfway through the second series with many viewers complaining that it was moving to fast and some of the storyline were rather far-fetched.

But Downton Abbey has had the last laugh after 10million viewers tuned in to last night's finale, its best ever overnight audience.
The last episode averaged 10.5 million viewers and a 38.8% audience share from 9pm, rising to 10.7 million when the repeat channel, ITV1+1, viewing is included
