Series 2 - 1. Steve Buscemi

Boardwalk Empire’s Steve Buscemi has played a fair number of shady characters during his career and he also reckons he might be going down “some dark roads” for his investigations into his mother’s family tree. He already knows his grandmother committed suicide, although it’s a subject his family has never talked about.

“I’m always interested in the struggles of people’s lives. I just hope to find a really interesting character whose story is compelling,” he says. That character is his great-great-grandfather Ralph B Montgomery who, it turns out, had a complicated and eventful life.

While the American version of WDYTYA is not as gripping as the home-grown original (and certainly misses Mark Strong’s narration), it’s still highly watchable.
About this programme
1/7. New series. Actor, writer and director Steve Buscemi traces his ancestry in the American version of the genealogy show. The star of Reservoir Dogs, Fargo and Boardwalk Empire researches the life of his mother's great-grandfather Ralph B Montgomery, who lived in New Jersey during the 1870s. However, as he digs deeper, he uncovers a darker story involving a tarnished Civil War service record and a mysterious suicide.
