Protecting Our Children
Series 1 - 1. Damned If They Do, Damned If They Don't
BBC2, BBC HD, Monday 31st Jan 9pm - 10pm
Three-year-old Toby lives amid the detritus of a squalid flat; he has no bed and no toothbrush, and ekes out a space to play on a carpet filthy with dog muck. His bovine parents can barely rouse themselves to take an interest in their son and are suspected of serious neglect. Worse, Toby has turned up at his nursery school with unexplained bruising.
This harrowing but admirable film follows Bristol social workers as they repeatedly try to do what is best for Toby. We accompany newly qualified Susanne as she makes unannounced visits to the family where she faces Toby’s belligerent, defensive father. There are visits from other social workers, and case conferences involving different agencies. Still Toby’s situation does not improve. Though Protecting Our Children is careful not to offer judgements, the big question is implicit – what would YOU do?
