Mark Lawson Talks to Mark Rylance
BBC4, Sunday 15th April 10:35pm - 11:35pmMark Rylance’s performance as Johnny “Rooster” Byron in Jez Butterworth’s state-of-the-nation play Jerusalem won him both an Olivier and a Tony award. Here, he brings that stage magnetism to a chat with Mark Lawson, in which he candidly talks about the “trench of self-criticism” in which he sometimes finds himself, the liberation he feels at playing someone other than himself and his regrets at filming the extended sex scenes for 2001 movie Intimacy. Of the last of these, Rylance comments wryly: “It raised my respect for porn stars”.
An interview with the acclaimed theatrical actor and former artistic director of London's Globe Theatre, who has become renowned for his Shakespearean roles - as well as his doubts about the authorship of some of the playwright's works. Rylance discusses his career on stage, revealing why his frustrations with the Royal Shakespeare Company led him to strike out on his own in the early 1980s, and also reflects on a selection of his cinematic roles, including his highly controversial performance in the 2001 film Intimacy.
