I really enjoyed Eurovision this year. I thought all the entries were good & I think Sweden did a good job of hosting it. Kudos to them for pointing out that UK were the ones who thought of the idea of the Eurovision Song Contest & started it all off.

I'm glad that Denmark won, as that was my favourite one as well. I also liked Azerbajahn (sp?) who came 2nd, Russia, & Finland, but as she performed 4th that was a bad position. You will notice that all the ones at the top, performed in the second half. Not sure why Ireland came last but there we go.

Thanks to Slovenia for giving us our highest points of 7 ()^

I think the fact that we don't enter the Semi Finals is a big disadvantage, as quite often songs grow on you the more you hear them. It also is a good practice run for the performers. People probably watch the Semi Finals & already make up their mind who they want to win out of those, so probably don't pay much attention to the other few they hear on the night. In fact, the ones who didn't do the Semi Finals all came near the bottom.

I had listened to Denmark's entry loads of times on youtube before the competetition & on Saturday morning, I actually woke up singing it! Initially, I couldn't think what it was I was singing, then realised it was Denmark's Eurovision entry! I thought then that it had the makings of a winner - one that is catchy & memorable.

From Popbitch:-

UK's five-person Eurovision "professional"
jury included Tony Blackburn (age 72) and
Tony Hatch (age 75). Eurovision's main
demographic? 14-29.

>> Eurovision fallout <<
The show is only the start...

Odds-on favourites Denmark won, but
more interesting is how well the
event reflects the politics of the
region. Let's look at how the
dictatorships of the east viewed it:

* Belarus - President Lukashenko
criticized the voting as false,
because they got no votes from Russia.

* Azerbaijan - President Aliev
demands a recount because they
awarded Russia 0 points.

* Russia - Foreign Minister Lavrov
is unhappy at this snub, ominously
saying the two nations "coordinate
joint efforts to make sure this
outrageous action does not go
unanswered".

It may yet get worse for Azerbaijan.
Lithuania TV claimed people in
smaller countries were given phones
and 20 euros to repeatedly vote
for Azerbaijan.

FYI: Azerbaijan got 10 sets of 12 points,
inc from Lithuania. Montenegro awarded 12
points to Ukraine in the Semi Final and
0 in the Final, giving 12 to Azerbaijan.

FY2: Azerbaijan's entry was very good,
winning the Eurovision commentators
award behind the scenes, so a high
placing was likely/well deserved.

FYI3: The split between jury/public
votes is anxiously awaited everywhere,
as Italian TV reported that Romania
(23% public vote) - 1 pt from Italy,
Denmark (3% public vote) - 12 points.

More from 'POP BITCH

>> Euro deja vu <<
Don't play that song again

The last time Eurovision was held
in Sweden was in 2000. The contest
was won by Denmark, Malta came eighth
and France was a lowly 23rd. The UK's
entry was a woman whose biggest chart
success had been a version of Total
Eclipse Of The Heart. Exactly as
happened in 2013. Spooky!

>> Jury disservice <<
Eurovision results are out

Eurovision always sends fan
sites into conspiracy theory mode,
but never as much as this year.
The info detailing the splits between
what the public voted for and the
choices of the juries will do little
to quell the backlash. With the
practical and political complexities
involved in managing the contest
these days, the EBU does a pretty
good job, so we won't be joining
in on the wilder theories. But
the current system of secretive
national juries over-riding popular
acts is storing up problems.

Greece's hairy men, Romania's opera
star and the Hungarian hipsters
unsurprisingly all had huge public
votes but were marked very low by
juries, who backed boring ballads
(Moldova, Georgia) over fun and
entertainment. You'd have to wonder
if even Lordi would have won
under this system.

Denmark seem to have won both public vote
and jury selection. Which is good news.
