Storyville - Buck Brannaman
BBC4, Mon 3rd June 10pm - 11:25pmThis intriguing documentary follows Buck Brannaman, the inspiration behind the Nicholas Evans book and Robert Redford film The Horse Whisperer. For nine months of the year Brannaman travels the highways of America, visiting ranches to deliver classes in horse interaction. He comes across as a gentle soul, though as the film proceeds, Brannaman candidly reveals details of his troubled childhood, which possibly provides an explanation for the inspiration behind his unusual methods. It's an approach that rejects abusive training methods and instead relies on building a rapport with the animal. Buck is a leisurely ride and director Cindy Meehl does little to flesh out the doting entourage who are crucial to Brannaman's life. But credit to her for painting a vivid picture of the relationship between this man and his equine clientele. A charismatic individual and an uplifting treatment make this an entertaining chronicle of a subject unknown to many.
