24 Hours in A&E

Channel 4, Wed 10th Apr 9pm - 10pm

Repeat: Channel 4 +1 today 10pm

Repeat: 4seven Today 11:05pm

CCTV footage shows a young woman punched brutally in the head. She pitches back into the road where she is found, unconscious, by a passer-by. The woman, Suzanne, was on her way home at 10pm when she was attacked. She arrives at London’s King’s College Hospital with serious head injuries and a scan reveals swelling on her brain.

As this estimable series returns we follow patients as they are assessed by teams of health professionals who act with admirable clarity. When 12-year-old Tom is brought in after a road accident, consultant Emer takes command. “It’s like an F1 pit crew. Everyone has a role,” she says as we watch her calmly steer her team through the minutes after a catastrophe.

1/20. Return of the documentary following life inside one of Britain's busiest A&E departments at King's College Hospital in south London. A doctor is shocked when a young woman arrives in resus with life-threatening swelling on her brain following a random attack by a stranger on the streets, while a mother faces an agonising wait as tests are carried out on her 12-year-old son, who was hit by a car and airlifted to King's by emergency medics. A 90-year-old former circus performer is also in A&E after collapsing at home, and news of his colourful past quickly circulates among the staff.
