It’s an eerie start to Ben Court and Caroline Ip’s unsettling thriller and the feeling of a fractured world grows throughout the opening episode.
Missing Hattie’s neighbours are a strange lot, particularly the men, each of whom behaves as if he has much to hide. One has a blood spatter on his shirt, another is secretive, neglectful and violent towards his son. Yet another is an obsessive property developer who drinks during the day and broods about his stalled project to build a housing estate. All of them are called upon to form a search party.
The cast is excellent – Peter Firth, Sophie Okonedo, Aidan Gillen – and the gripping story feels pleasingly fresh. Mayday is in five parts, running nightly until Thursday.
