Jack Taylor
Channel 5, Thursday 21st Feb 9pm - 10:45pm
Repeat: Channel 5 +1 Today 10pmThe first of three feature-length crime dramas based on Ken Bruen’s books introduces Iain Glen, forever patrolling the city’s streets in unbuttoned great coat and two-day beard, as a dishevelled Galway gumshoe.
Having left the Guards (the Irish police force) because he punched
a minister for speeding, Jack sets himself up as a finder, a seeker of lost people and a pursuer of lost causes. Whereupon a glamorous female client hires him to hunt for her teenage daughter. Is the girl’s fate connected to the teenage suicides that keep washing up on the city’s riverfront?
It’s a leisurely procedural but the Galway setting and the splendid cast of supporting roles (tramps, landlords, priests) give it plenty of character. Plus, Ralph Brown adds an edge to things as Taylor’s best friend – a painter with a colourful past.
