Mellor has created the same alchemy for the second series, with a new bunch of actors including Mark Addy and Siobhan Finneran. It’s a different syndicate – we are no longer in a Leeds supermarket but have moved to a Bradford hospital, where a group of low-paid workers buys a winning £72 million lottery ticket.
The ticket is missing thanks to feckless young Becky (Natalie Gavin), which is where the episode starts. Such is Kay Mellor’s skill as a writer that fault-lines in the group’s relationships with each other and beyond crack open to reveal the unhappiness, thwarted ambitions and in one case the dangers that lie beneath. It’s funny, too.
