Scotland Decides: Salmond versus Darling

When Alistair Darling and Alex Salmond had their first televised arm-wrestle over Scotland’s independence referendumo, most of the UK were unable to see it. Those outside Scotland had to rely on soundbites, and subsequent polls suggesting that Darling’s arguments against independence had possibly, narrowly, won out.
Now it’s seconds away: round two. And Scots and other Brits alike can see how the debate unfolds, what palpable hits are scored and whose rhetoric seems the most convincing and/or inspiring. Vitally important for those who will vote, yes, but also for the rest of us who will, if the result is a ‘Yes’ vote, inherit a truncated, diminished and very different UK.
A slug-fest between two political welterweights might seem like a poor evening’s entertainment. But that’s tough: whether the debate ends up sparking into life or fizzling out, with plenty of voters undecided, these 90 minutes of TV matter.
As the people of Scotland prepare to vote in next month's referendum on whether to break away from the rest of the UK, Glenn Campbell chairs the second debate between First Minister Alex Salmond and Better Together leader Alistair Darling. The SNP leader and the former chancellor of the exchequer will lay out their competing visions for the future of Scotland in front of a specially invited audience at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, while political commentators provide expert analysis.
