People will soon be able to vote for politicians in their local Tesco or post office, by home computer or by texting from their mobile phone, just as they do for contestants on Big Brother or Strictly Come Dancing, Lord Falconer, the lord chancellor, will announce today.

There will be 16 experimental voting areas testing new systems in the local elections in May - from large cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester to rural areas in East Anglia and the West Country. But the Electoral Commission has expressed concern about the dangers of fraudulent voting.

The government don't realise that there are a lot of people who still wouldn't vote even using BB-style methods. I've voted more in elections than in BB (in fact, I've only ever voted once in BB - in the Alex/Spencer eviction vote) but a lot of BB or Pop Idol or Courtney Love Island viewers probably still wouldn't vote for politicians.
