We asked one of Britain's top wrioters to assess the latest Big Brother with its mentally ill inmates. His verdict: a spitefully cruel, utterly mindless freak show which raises deeply worrying questions about TV and modern life
Some people find Channel 4’s Big Brother compelling television.

Anyone sadistic enough to tune in can watch the ‘house-mates’ scrapping, flirting, drinking, mis-behaving together and exposing their pathetic character flaws.

Others, the great majority of the country, do not merely find the programme desultory and numbingly boring. They find it morally repellent.

There are many symptoms that surround us of the moral putrescence of our society, its complete Gadarene lurch into mindless, rootless, meaningless nastiness. But Big Brother is high on the list of indications that, as a society, Britain today has completely lost it.
