C4 cancels live Big Brother final

Channel 4's Big Brother final will no longer be shown live because contestants on this year's show broke rules on swearing before the watershed.

The move comes after broadcasting watchdog Ofcom upheld two complaints against Channel 4 over three separate incidents of bad language on the show.

Ofcom noted that 14% of the 6.4 million viewers on the night were children.

Channel 4 said it had undertaken "a serious review", and next year's final would be shown on a time delay.

However, the broadcaster defended its decision to broadcast this year's show live.

WATCHDOGS TELL BIG BROTHER: DO NOT SWEAR

CHANNEL 4 is to drop live coverage of the Big Brother finals before 9pm after being censured by TV watchdogs over swearing on this year's show.

Housemates failing to heed Davina McCall's familiar warning to "please do not swear" led to complaints to industry governing body Ofcom.

And despite no complaints being made to Channel 4 themselves, the broadcaster said today it would introduce a time-minute delay to its pre-watershed coverage of the final from next year.

C4 rapped over Big Brother f-word finale

Channel 4 has decided to stop broadcasting the Big Brother finale live following a spate of pre-watershed swearing.

In future, the last show in the series will be broadcast with a time delay so that offensive language can be edited out.

The decision was made after viewers complained when Nikki Grahame and Aisleyne both used the F-word before the watershed.

In the past, Channel 4 has aired the finale from the Big Brother house with a delay in order to cover up swearing.

But the end of the last series in August was broadcast live as producers thought it was unlikely that the remaining contestants would swear.

Today, broadcasting watchdog Ofcom ruled that Channel 4 had breached its code because of the swearing.

Ofcom said: “It is surprising that the decision was taken to broadcast the finale without a delay, given its pre-watershed start, and the audience it was likely to attract.

“We were also concerned that the language was broadcast three times, without, apparently, any of the on-site production team noticing.”

Channel 4 apologised and said it had decided to record the show with a suitable time delay pre-watershed to enable the most offensive language to be edited out.” breakingnews
