WHAT is the point of Big Brother? I ask this not in a hectoring let's-get-this-pile-of-rubbish-off-our-screens-now sort of a way, but seriously, because I wonder if this is a question Endemol or Channel 4 have ever really tried to resolve.
Is it just a reality game show where almost anything goes in the attempt to win £70,000 and celebrity status? A Victorian freak show where contestants are chosen for their volatility and dysfunction? Or are its aims loftier? Is it, as some have claimed, a sophisticated social experiment, which gives insight into the way human beings behave in a pack? Or a mirror which reflects the best, and worst, of our culture for public scrutiny?
