Okay, each week Monkey Jnr gets three spellings that she has to learn.

On this week's list, we have the following:

go

get

I

Right, no probs with the first two but "I"??????? It's meant to be spellings not "just say what I just said". Which is a shame it's not, cos she'd get A Levels already in that

nah, she's 4. Just acts a lot like a 13 year old at the moment, which is not good news. I'm sure there's a lot of valid reasons for having "I" on there, just seemed a bit odd that they have a single letter in a spellings list. Better make sure she gets it right

Surprised they give spellings out at foundation stage nowadays.....

'I' might seem obvious,but you'd be amazed how many kids don't associate the word with it's letter name(as opposed to it's sound).It's one of life's little quirks that after learning the alphabet by song and rhyme they then have to learn another phonetic one.It's no wonder kids get confused. ${

As for 'go'.Even ten year olds are capable of mis-spelling that one.I've seen 'gow','goa' and 'goe'.As for 'get'.Because of the Berkshire accent some of the kids here have,it gets pronounced and spelt as 'git'.

Personally,I blame these 'activity' and 'fun' days teachers do for the dumbing down of standards {@} {@}

My genius elder daughter had to write three sentences about her impressions of a book she had read. She was about 10. And at the time (at least), she was one of the brightest in the class - but she'd decided that school work was for losers.

These were the three sentences she wrote.

1. It liked it.

2. A lot.

3. So I did.

Her Dad was proud that she was so clever, in being so economical with her words. :roll:

I used to be concerned about the apparent low standards in her school. Did extra work with her, in preparation for the Secondary Level entrance test. In the end, none of it mattered.

People say 'they get there, in the end'. I hope so!

We wouldn't have got away with that in making the sentences GG. I can't remember ever being allowed to write like that when describing things, but then again as you'll have noticed I tend to be overly descriptive :oops:

We were taught the alphabet like a, bee, cee or whatever but yeah, I can see why they do it the phonetic way. Can see how it would be very confusing to understand "your name is Molly... it starts with an "em".
