Specifically Larry, but would appreciate advice from anyone. I am now the proud owner of a Sony Vaio laptop. Yes I have forsaken my apple and gone over to the dark side. (Sorry CT I was tempted by the new apple but it isn't compatible with my OU interactive stuff, which was the deciding factor). Anyway have been playing with it all day, and have come up with a few problems, some of which I will have to go to apple I think to sort out. One which someone here might be able to help me with is that I can't seem to locate an audio device to play music from my itunes account or cds. Can anyone direct me, using as least technical works as possible. I press play in itunes but no sound comes out. {@} Oh and I just found a little speaker icon but when I click it, it says 'no audio output device is installed'. Surely this would automatically be in the hardware? I'ver never had this issue before.

The audio device should have been installed as the operating system completed installation when you first powered up the Laptop.

Questions

XP or Vista ?
Which model is the Laptop ?
I'll see if Sony have any listed problems.

Solution 3002

Description:

How to troubleshoot sound problems.

Solution:

*

The following are possible diagnostic steps to isolate and resolve this issue:
1. Check to see if the built-in speakers are turned off - Press Fn+F3 to turn on the speakers.
2. The speaker volume may be turned to the minimum - Press Fn+F4, and then press the arrow keys to increase the volume. If the computer is powered by batteries, check that the battery packs are inserted properly and that they are charged.
3. If you are using an application that has its own volume control, check that the volume is turned up.
4. Check the volume controls: (Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment and then click Volume Control).
5. If external speakers are connected, check that the speakers are properly connected and the volume is turned up. If the speakers have a mute button, make sure it is off. If the speakers are powered by batteries, check that the batteries are inserted properly and that they are charged.
6. If you have connected headphones or an audio cable to the headphone connector, disconnect the cable.
7. If the CD-ROM drive is in the drive bay of the docking station, you will not hear sound from the built-in speakers of your computer from a CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
8. Enable the infrared port (if applicable).

*

To listen to audio CDs on the VAIO PCG-505, you need to plug headphones into the CD-ROM drive. If you are using external speakers with your VAIO PCG-505, click here.

Thanks for this Larry. Have tried solutions 1 - 3. No luck. On no 4, I can't find entertainment in accessories and looked for it using the search programme also, but no joy. 5, 6 and & don't apply and I wouldn't know how to do no 8.

Gawd I hate computers, or rather I hate me and computers. Thanks Larry, but it looks like I'll be ringing the shop when they open on Thursday.
