I've been wandering around various 'Big Brother' sites and have noticed that some rogue software, Xupiter toolbar, has been getting installed on my PC with no warning. My home page has been reset too.

I've tracked this down to one site now - 'The Big Brother Show' running from http://www.thebigbrothershow.cjb.net/

EVERY time I go there it installs the ruddy Xupiter software and I don't ask it to - it just appears! Thankfully I know how to get rid of it, bit it's not recommended if you're not confident in editing the registry settings of your computer.

So - if you ever find a link to that site - avoid it. Sites hosted on cjb.net tend to have pop-ups and adverts appearing behind the current screen. This 'browser aid' seems to be little more than spy-ware which re-sets your home page and I don't know what other nasties!

Thanks for the warning. :D
You probably have these but I will mention them anyway.....
I use Adaware which is very good if that helps. I also use the EMS FreeSurfer ll pop up blocker. Both very good tools to have and both free. The freesurfer even blocks the private message pop ups on here, but your tower does make a beep so you know.

Thanks for the warning BB4. Another really annoying one is the Gator programme. This can instal itself very slyly when you don't even realise it if you click on the wrong button. We have had this twice now and it encourages pop ups all the time on your computer by quite reputable firms which makes it all the more annoying that they use such a thing. I cannot give a warning as to what to avoid for this because it is so sly you don't even realise where you've gone wrong, just be very careful, doubly careful, because we are meticulous with what we click on and have still had it twice.

Grrrrr....

;) The Big Brother Show Webbie:
Why not get a .tk web address and turn the .tk linker promo off so your visitors can enjoy your site without being constantly annoyed...

If they are hosting on CJB then you'll still get the dumb install program, does not matter if you front-end it with a .TK domain.

One of the major problems with some sites is that they try to do it on the cheap, using 'free' hosting - this is either from their ISP, and they exceed bandwidth allocations, or they use one with pop-up adverts or even these silly spyware programs that install without you knowing it.

The rule is to be careful where you put your website. If you have a 'fan' site then expect to get lots of hits, which makes places like Geocities pretty useless as they'll stop people visiting if you get more than 2.7841203 hits in a week (or something as low as that). I've been around some time (back to the days when email addresses ALL ended in .UUCP) and have tried loads of them.

If you ar looking to run a successful site then the only way to do this is via a proper domain name with a proper hosting package. Trying to do it on the cheap never works!

(Apologies to all those who fell asleep with the techie talk)

In short, avoid the site I mentioned in the original post 'cos it installs some naughty software on your nice computer and it's a swine to get rid of - all the rest is either comments about other similar stuff or tech talk about creating a website too cheaply.

And now... Back to the music...

ermmmmm.... well just type EMS freesurfer ll on google and you should find plenty of sites :D There are probably loads of others out there if you just search for free pop up blockers, but I use this one myself and recommend it.

Anyone get those annoying pop ups that appear as system notices? Think its only on XP and windows 2000, keep getting one for byebyeads.com but there must be a free download?

Maybe we should have a techy forum so as not to annoy the hell out of everyone?
