Also, i think that the insanly high wages of those in the entertainment industry devalue the work of others. Lets say for instance, that popstars earned less than nurses and firefighters, then 19,000 would seem like a lot.

Again, I have to say that the MP's gave themselves a 40% pay rise last year. We've had to fork out for that so why not for the people who put their lives at risk for us every day?

The firefighters get my support 100%. However, I would like to highlight to my fellow BBFans friends that I am a qualified district nurse:

I have an honours degree, a postgraduate degree with a specialist practitioner qualification, a diploma and I am dual qualified (i.e. a registered general nurse and registered mental nurse) with 14 years experience as a nurse. I am currently responsible for providing and prescribing care to 56 patients and their families in the community, and this predominantly involves looking after patients who are dying.

Do you know what my salary is? £19,000.

I sincerely wished nurses could strike like the firefighters. Anyone regarded as an essential emergency worker needs to be paid appropriately and be recognised that the work that they do provide is essential. You know what really makes me mad is when I see the likes of footballers, pop artists, models etc earning silly amounts of money. If someone was to shoot this lot would society be in dire straits? I think not.

Give the firemen and women the money they deserve and pay us nurses an acceptable wage too.

Sermon over!!!

Dear Ruby,

You and people like yourself are wonderful, you deserve so much more than you recieve for all the hard work you do and the service you give.

I can not understand why the MP's awarded themselves such large pay rises so recently when our public services are struggling to get a decent a living wage.

With out police, nurses, ambulances and firemen [sorry not named all] what kind of life would we have.

xxxxx

Too right SantaClause!! MP's are quite happy to award themselves a decent pay rise. I would love to ask them:

(1)If they will be working on Christmas Day and won't be seeing their families because of work

(2) If they would tolerate verbal and physical abuse in the work place

(3) If they think £19,000 is an acceptable salary for a professional, highly skilled member of society

(4) If they would be prepared to place themselves in a vulnerable position to danger.

I bet they would all say NO to the above. I will be working Christmas Day and won't see my family, I have to tolerate verbal and physical abuse, I have to accept £19,000 and I am in a vulnerable position to danger. I wont be getting a 40% pay rise.

I have to say that I have never met a horrible Fireman....they're all so lovely. {@}

Think it must be in the job description.

The world would be a better place if we all got what we deserved but sadly this rarely happens.

The people who do these jobs are in a caring position and as such will usually do the best they can to help. This strike must be hurting them as much as everyone else.

IMHO the firemen are now caught in the middle of a power struggle.

With regard to Scotslass original question, In theory they have the public support 100% In practise the services are needed.

I don't think they do Santa! Tonight we were at a petrol station directly opposite a fire station with pickets..... in the five minutes we were there (on a very busy road at rush hour) only four cars peeped their horn.

Yes I well understand that, I was driving through Wembley today [unfortunately] and they had been on tv this morning. There was very little tooting for them.

This is what I meant by theory and practise, we all know with out a doubt our services are dreadfully underpaid, but the support is going to be a major factor as in reality we want our services.

As CC pointed out "what a dilema"

A big power struggle.

Someone said something today that I think puts it into perspective......
A 40% pay rise for firefighters would mean that their salary would be approx. £30,000. A tube driver in London earns £32,000 p.a........
Hmmmmm!
Another figure from today's news - policeman covering some of the work of firefighters are earning £26 an hour overtime at the moment! Shocking!

Like you said though, if firefighters got a 40% increase (which blatantly isn't going to happen), nurses would want that, teachers would want that, everyone working in the public sector would want that!
It's a tricky one. I can't wait for it to end and for my Dad to go back to work, so he stops moping around the house all day, watching Sky News and getting worked up with all the news reports.

Since I have been banging on about my rubbish pay, can I just say that teachers and the police are paid much more than nurses and firefighters. Whilst both the former public sectors work hard and deserve every penny they get, I do get annoyed when people say teachers don't earn enough. Teachers don't have to work Christmas and New Year and they get long summer holidays. They earn a hell of a lot of more money than me. Just on a final whinge, if teachers make an error at work, it is not particularly life threatening. If a nurse makes an error at work, it could possibly result in the death of someone. Where is the justice in that?

Cer, too right. However, I don't want to offend any teachers that may access this site. I am not disputing that their jobs are not valuable and perhaps we don't appreciate how much overtime they do at home but they do have the luxury of working Monday to Friday, they don't have to do night shift and they are definitely paid a hell of a lot more than a nurse or firefighter.

does it annoy anyone that football players make so much money when all they're doing is kicking around a crappy ball?
