I think what makes 9/11 different from other tragedies (not necessarily the worst) is the way we all wtached it unfold ...

The horror of what was happening and the awfully empathy for those helplessly trapped...seeing the second plane and the towers collapsing...knowing so many were losing their lives at that moment and we were witnessing it!

Well I really do not know what to say --- HOW can people moan about a post that states that your own thoughts and love go out to the victims of September 11th....

As someone said people die every day and a "group" of people died together every fews days now...

I have no quarms if someone starts a thread for these people...

Perhaps we should have a section for these posts...It would save people having a go because another group of people were not mentioned.

I still stand by my post - God Bless these effected by 9- 11 - which includes my nephew.....

my own personal, memory of that awful few days, was actually Sept 12th, rather than the 11th.
I was flying up to Newcastle, to compete in The Great North Run.
As you can imagine, the thought of flying, wa a bit worrying, so close to these events...but i personally chose to defy terrorism and keep to my plans.
Having had an understandably long and laboured check-in at LHR, i preceed through to the departure lounge. It was, in the circumstances, suprisingly busy, with people doing all the normal stuff people do in departure lounges - drinking coffee, reading books etc.
Suddenly, a bloke of arab/middle eastern appearance, walked through to the lounge....and suddenly the whole atmosphere radically changed.
:-? You could cut the tension with a knife, and everyone's eyes were glued to him. :-?
So, for me, the abiding memory, is one of wary suspicion and tension.
Terrorism, and terrorists not only bomb and destroy lives , they also destroy trust and confidence. :-?

English football matches weren't posponded. :-?
I know this for a fact, because i had a ticket for Reading v West ham, in
the Worthless Cup, that night, but decided in the circumstances, it wasn't
appropriate to go. :-?
All matches observed a silence with black arm bands, but nothing was cancelled.

Well said Adrian.

What probably upset me most of all was here about the last phone calls to loved ones...what must those people have gone through before their deaths.

My parents had a similar situation coming home from America - as you can imagine security was immense in the first few days of the airports re-opening, they were already 2 days delayed and everyone just wanted to get home to their families.

3 arab looking blokes were on their connecting flight and 3 english women refused to get on the flight until these men were searched or removed from the flight!!! Mum said she felt awful for the three innocent blokes but felt relief that they'd been checked over several times too....

My dad is a dead ringer for sadam hussain imagine how we'd feel if he wasnt allowed on a flight just cos of the way he looks!

I saw it live just before the second tower was hit, so we all saw the second plane go into the tower.
Because I was at the time working somewhere with journalists and a news hub, we had phone calls and emails flying around the office beofr eit was up on the TV, the whole thing was surreal.
And yes because of actually watching it live it made a big impact on me personaly, I felt disconected from it, but as we were all doing research and following feeds on the net, on the TV etc as well as getting bulletins before they went live on the news, I felt caught up in it.
It was the silence afterwards I think, when both towers fell and the pentagon was hit, a load of us went out for a cigarette, outside on the streets everyone was doing the same thing, we were standing with masses of people all just silent. Plus we had people in the office who knew people over in the towers...terrible day
