Absolutely no need for an apology Felicity. Just merely pointing out that people who have suffered something similar know how you feel and can appreciate what you're saying.

thanks a lot guys :D

I guess I just feel so much on my dad's behalf...possibly more so now that my Gran and mum have both died and my dad is on his own......

thinking of remembrance day reminds me of my dad coming to visit me when I lived in London (in 1995) and we had a day out in Portsmouth at the Naval Memorial where his dad's name was listed - it was the first time he'd seen it...then last summer, just after my mum died, he came up to Orkney with me to visit friends and we went to a museum and found a photo of the ship my Grandad had been killed on. it was kind of bizarre

*not sure why I'm sharing this - it just seems kind of relevant and something to get off my chest*

Rememberance day is very important in my family. As I have said before the father of my two children has served in both Gulf wars and is still putting his life at risk even now. A lad from my daughters college was killed in the last Gulf war. he left college joined up and was killed. As well as the two world wars there are recent wars too and families continue to be affected. I never get through a rememberence day without crying I find it so moving. All polotics aside it's one day we should give thanks for the people who served in what ever way. ()^

If you're buying a poppy I'd reccomend buying Ben Eltons new book with it.

I heard him on the radio today and it's on my shopping list this Saturday.

It's called the First Casualty and it's set in Flanders fields in 1917, an historical thriller with lots of twists by the sound of it.

Have you read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks? Very powerful descriptions of life in the trenches in World War One.

My Grandad was on the HMS Repulse when it was bombed and sank in 1941 he was on of the few who survived and told remarkable tales of his escape and torment of leaving his friends to drown and only just managing to escape himself.

He never celebrated Remembrance day although Ive never known why that was I believe it was something to do with keeping the past in the past as his experiences were quite horrific!

He died aged 92 in 1995

For once, on Remembrance Day, remember how well off you are. Check it out on your internet or cable channels, in the car outside your house, your well-stocked fridge and the low-cost flight most of us could take tomorrow to the fields where those men fell.

It's this bit that really brings a lump to my throat. It's easy to forget how lucky we are and just how much we really have to be grateful for. When I was a teenager I was still a kid really. My life was based around music and friends and fashion. I didn't know how lucky I was.

To think that other teenagers were subjected to the horrors of the trenches instead of the teenage life that I/we lived is truly humbling.

I think it's a day to forget about those reservists that put their name on a list then complain when the get drafted into conflicted. I believe they're just people who want to have a tab to their names without actually doing something. Pretty lame excuses for individuals IMHO
