Lets start with the head.

1st picture shows the extra Acrylic in front of the lenses (look back to see the difference).
Image

2nd and third show the marine ply held in place with tape. The ply is very flexible and didn't require any treatment to follow the curve. So initially I'll try the tape for a day and see if it retains the shape.

Image

4th shows the extra bit added to fill a hole at the back.

Image

5th shows the angled side panels after gluing .I will try and remove as many of the screws as possible as I move around with the glue and filler. As you can see the other side still needs going.

Image

I think also that I've got a method using a small motor a couple of gears ,belts ,and pulleys a way to wag the tail. If it works I'll include a picture ,but first I need to find a 5 volt regulator to feed the motor.

It's only 2 inch gaffer tape but very sticky so very useful for holding panels in place whilst glue sets.

Current pictures.

1. My K9 with toy K9
Image

2. Refer to previous post but the filling and gluing has started so screws are being removed ,edges are being sanded true and filler used to plug gaps and in some places build-up the edges. Next few follow the work.

K9 now has his Tag.
Image

The side cover has been remade and the catches changed around.
Image
Image

The head has also been taken apart and glued. Plus the outer neck cover is now Black thanks to a permanent marked pen that really dries Black and not Purple like most others.
Image

Things to be done include making the monitor aperture squarer ,and also making the large Red lights on the control panel squarer.

I meant to add this last night with the others.

Two pictures showing repair work to the leg that hit the wall a month or so ago when I tried to drive K9 in the hall and it took off too fast backwards and collided with the wall before I could stop it.

Before after damaged was removed.

After

The current Dr Who line-up
Image

The Dalek is 18 inches high and fully radio controlled and voice operated if put in the correct mode. It can also interact with other Dr Who toys.
The shop I bought it from has just reduced the price to £29.99 so another will be heading this way for someone else.
Also hoping the get a 12 inch Davros if the shop has them. Then I'll make a Tardis to the same scale and a Davros chair for someone else to the same scale in MDF. I think an Action Man would fit in the chair.

Image

The Tardis would be 71.4CM high and 34.8cm square on a 36.3CM square base.
The large Davros uses the skirt and fender section (the lower half) of the 2005 Dalek though after that it starts to get a bit more interesting thought still less complicated than building the rest of the Dalek.

The main problem is going to be storing everything !

I've bought 3 sheets of 2ft x 3ft 2mm MDF which I should be able to cut with a craft knife to build the models with. I will need something a bit thicker for the bases.

Sounds like you are going to be kept busy then!

Shame about the K9 hitting the wall.

Yes I'm going to be busy for a while.

I got the radio controlled Davros today and it's definitely not to the same scale as the Dalek but it'll be very useful reference material for making the correct sized one.

The MDF should be hear tomorrow so the planning and construction will start shortly.

The basics are very straight forward and can be done in a few hours with the fiddly bits taking the time.

Same with the Tardis cutting the panels out is the easy bit but the finer points and the gluing take the time.

Yes the K9 needs a speed controller as once it gets traction it takes off and is rather fast. The original race car which powers it should have been capable of around 20MPH ! The extra weight should slow it down a bit but it's not a progressive throttle so on-off power which normally results in lots of wheel spinning. A controller will build up the speed.

Well this is what I've been doing the last two nights

Click on the image for a bigger image.

Can you tell what it's going to be when it's finished ? It's Dr Who related.

This what it looks like with a head
ImageImage

Again clicking the images will get the full size pictures.

The original idea was to papamacha the frame.

It all started while looking through the new Argos catalogue and the series 4 action figures and the need to collect all 12 to get the Vespiform figure which is a Wasp but at a minimum of £84 which is the cheapest I can find the set for plus the fact that some of the figures are already owned there's no way I'd pay that much just to get the parts to build the 13th figure. And so far there's no official mention of a Deluxe figure of the Vespiform so I decided to have a go at building one.

The wire frame is built from three sizes of copper wire soldered together and measures 11 inches long by 9 inches across the tips of the feet (3 inches across the body) and 8 1/2 inches to the wing tips.

The outer rings in the thorax should have been smaller to make it more rounded but it still doesn't look too bad.

Thanks.

I think adding the skin is going to be a lot harder than I originally thought.
I don't know if I made the mesh smaller if I could possibly use glue to fill the gaps but at the end it needs to be painted. Plus the wings need to be transparent .

I need elongate the head a bit and then reposition the antennae and put some eyes in the correct position.

And to think that before starting the K9 I hadn't attempted to build anything like models before.
