hello
i hope you dont mind me bombarding you with constant pc questions!

ive recently purchased a laptop (toshiba satellite wit XP) The problem is i cannot find word or any of office on here. ive done a search but nothing comes up except wordpad.

i originally had office on here but i had to do a full system restore due to spyware.

i was not given any cds with office on.

on my old desktop pc, word was installed on the pc and i had no trouble in finding it after a system restore.

can you give me some pointers please?

much obliged

If you did a System Restore it should wipe out any changes (except to personal documents in My Documents) since your last checkpoint so unless you installed Office since your last checkpoint it should still be there. Try searching your hard drive (using Explorer - press the Windows button+E to launch it if you can't find the shortcut) for the MS Word application file which is called 'winword.exe'. Mine is located in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11' but it may be different on yours. The Outlook file is 'OUTLOOK.EXE' and Excel is 'EXCEL.EXE'.

If you find these files in Explorer right-click on the file icon and select 'Create Shortcut'. Then move these shortcuts to your desktop folder in Explorer.

I'm assuming you've checked all subfolders from the Start Menu and checked Desktop shortcuts and any QuickLaunch shortcuts?

Access is NOT included in the 'standard' edition. There exist a prof. edition, which cost somewhat more.

is the student version only available for a limited period? if so the key is probably encrypted somewhere. I imagine you wouldn't be able to re-install it without re-formatting your HD and you really don't want to do that if you can help it. There *may* be cracks but treat any crack you come across (fnarr fnarr) with total and absolute caution as some of them are disguised viruses.

Have you tried a second-hand copy of Office?

Or, alternatively, why not ditch Microsoft Office completely and install EasyOffice or OpenOffice which are free, or StarOffice 7(about £20)?

I think you can. You can 'Save as MS Word'. You can certainly open up Word and Excel documents

License runs out????????? The license on everything comes on a sticker (serial number), i would have thought you could reinstall this anytime you liked. I've never had office, but like i say, i would have thought with anything you could reinstall it anytime you liked.

some products are time-restricted or only offered on a trial basis. certainly some of the products we use at work require a new licence certificate after a year. some products are installed on a perpetual licence.

I don't know what the set up is for the Student/Teacher version of MS Office but seeing as it's considerably cheaper than even the standard version may mean it only works for 3-4 years. or it may mean the number of features is limited.

We use it at work and have never had to renew the licence..but I dont know whether it's because it's only licensed for the school site.It came as standard when we installed our old system. So maybe if its registered at an educational institution it's ok :-?

As far as i know, it's impossible for the files to change on the CD. Therefore, just uninstall the program, and then install it from the CD again???

it's not as simple as that (although as Pikey says one of the conditions of the licence may be that it's installed in a school or university so you may not be able to install it at home for example).

If a product has a limited-use licence key it cannot be uninstalled and re-installed once the period expires. This is because the product, although on a CD-ROM, WRITES data (the licence key, encrypted) to the hard drive. One sure-fire way may be to completely remove that application's entry from the registry but that may be akin to carrying out labotomy on your PC. That registry folder may not even hold the key - it may be held somewhere else.

I can only assume it's not transferable because otherwise we would all have pinched the schools package for home use(Especially as I have neither Powerpoint or excel at home) but even on out laptops we dont use the schools office package even though the PCs were purchased by the school so I assume theres a problem with doing that.I couldnt be sure though.Sorry can't be more help
