Strange question I know ,but we went on a very long country walk this afternoon and we spotted something strange on the far side of one of the lakes. The camera lens gave a better view. The picture was taken with a 300mm Telephoto lens at a distance of maybe 100ft plus.
If it's a Duck then I've never seen one like that before.
Take a look and tell me what you think.

I initially thought it was a heron but realised it was a bit different.

Is a heron gull a cross between a heron and a seagull or something?

Bloody H*ll! Well done Blags! Looked like a pelican to me...
p.s don't suppose you know what type of bird dive into the sea from the air and come out with fish? Saw loads of them in Turkey and I thought guillemots for some reason, but not sure why as I don't really know what a guillemot is? My brother-in-law is into birds but I keep forgetting to ask him

Molly I'm certain I've heard of a bird that does that but can't think of it's name

If it's white with pale blue eyes it's a gannet.

A picture of a heron is at: http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/guide/g/gr ... /index.asp

Oh I thought a gannet was a baby bird with it's mouth open demanding food! They were quite small, well a bit smaller than a sea-gull, greyish-brown and they dived from the air straight into the sea. It was in Turkey but I bet we get similar birds in the UK too. They'd come out of the water with fish. I'd love to know what they are called.

rofl - when I realised what I'd done, a split second before reading this post I laughed so much I was nearly crying! ::lol:: Oh dear! Sorry Blags, Sorry Hippo! Anyway from my point it could have been worse, I could've called my bf either Blags or Hippo. I've already called myself 'Molly' and he said 'hmm... you're spending too much time on that site!' ::lol::

I'm not sure what the bird would be. A gannet is predominantly white and larger than a gull, I think, and a guillemot is mainly black (just looked it up).

Thanks all.
From the shore you couldn't make out much with the eye. I did hear what ,going by the RSPB ,might well have been the call of the Heron.
We have a very large area of lakes where gravel has been extracted from the Nene Valley and they are well populated hundreds of different birds.

Now tomorrow I'll be off to a local field to collect some Nettles that have Peacock and Tortoise Shell catapillars on them. Passed by them today and they are covered in them. If you can keep the Nettles alive then it's easy to get to the end stage with new Butterflies to release back into the wild. I remember doing this many years ago with Peacock Butterfly catapillars.
