Do you smoke? I do. I recently was convinced that I was pregnant and so I quit smoking and alcohol instantly. When I discovered that it wasn't to beno questions thank you - I don't want to talk about it Now that I know there is no mini-molly on the way my resolve is weaker! What's the best way to give up?

I bought a book today by Alan Carr about how to give up smoking. I haven't read it yet. My workmate swears by it. Do/did you smoke and if so how did you quit? answers on a postcard please...?

All advice gratefully appreciated! :)
Molly: aka weak bugga with no self-discipline it seems (sorry Cal, stole your line!) :-?

Have never smoked thank goodness....

I am told one of the most effective techniques is to smoke a pack and put all the butts in a jam jar and put a little water over them and screw a lid on.Then everytime you're tempted have a deep sniff from the jar and its supposed to put you off lighting up.

Good luck :D

Hello, I don't post on here very much (more of a lurker) but as someone who is 3 months into my latest quit attempt your thread caught my eye. I think different things will work for different people (for example I have never got on with NRT but others swear by it) so I don't think anyone can give a definitive "how to stop smoking" answer, but what I have found really helped me is to make a list of the reasons why I wanted to quit, and when I feel like having a fag I get the list out to remind myself of why I am quitting. And then think about all the benefits of stopping (more money, better health, house and clothes don't smell, not made to feel like a social leper etc) It's worked so far.

Also, saving the money that I used to spend on cigarettes and buying something nice at the end of each month as a treat helps.

Have a look at the website http://www.givingupsmoking.co.uk/

Or see if your local NHS do support groups or one to one help.

Good luck, and if you're anything like me expect to cough your lungs up for at least 3 months (and counting) after you stop.

Fingers crossed for you.

I don't smoke, but I know few people who does and I know few poeple who has quitted smoking with good results. The best way to quit up smoking seems to be just simply to decide to quit - now - and just quit smoking. You can do other tricks if you like and if they help you, but basic motivation has come inside of you.

Quit smoking is usually difficult to the persons that have become nicotine addictive ones.

I guess that we all know what smoking does to a man and that passive smoking has same effect. It also destroys rainforests and it's unethical to advertise smoking and cigarrets to the third world - where people have enough difficulties to survive daily life even without smoking.

If you quitted smoking immediately after you thought you were pregnant, you should just keep it going that way (non-smoking), whether you weren't pregnant, this time. Smoking also is one of the many reasons that weakens womens ability to get pregnant. It also weakens males sperm and erection which effects directly too to getting a female pregnant. ;)

Good luck with it, Molly! You can do it! ()^

Keep it up Sporozoa

I used nicotine gum as it gave an instant hit to a crave and something for my mouth to do, any repetotive action will stimulate serotonine in the brain and help keep you in a happy mood.

Pubs clubs and drinking ,.. smoke big stupid cigars in the early days other wise you will smoke a fag and the end of the quit progam where as one or two cigars on that ocasional booze night is far easier to move on from.

anyway thats how i did it. after 6 months no more cigars as i no longer like any smoke at all..

Its a choice.
---
You can choose to smoke, or not.
Simple really.

Of course, the people who say 'ohh its so tough....' are almost always the same types that whine about the government not doing enough for them, or the ones who complain about others...and yet are no better themselves.
---
Its a choice. Yes. 'choice'. A word that so many people these days seem to get upset about. Heaven forbid someone say 'take responsbility for yourselves', or 'just quit doing that icky habit'. Should I say instead 'awww, get drug patches instead' - despite the fact that they are inherently pointless in the long run? Or maybe I should say 'don't worry, it was peer pressure that made you take it up, poor poor you'"?

I could draw lots of cute coloured diagrams about the way in which the 4000+ chemical constituents interact with the synaptic pathways. Yet...its still a choice.
--
For the record, Smoking remains the most disgusting and unhealthy of all human activities.

As one of my favourite comedians used to say...."....S***, its so dangerous...even people who don't smoke die because of it !".
--
*ohh, and here is a sideline thought. Cocaine - in the pure form, remains infinately healthier (go read text books people). It remains a historical irony that Tobacco became a global industry, whilst coke was outlawed. lol, humanity is so very very dumb much of the time.

Calrissian: Never smoked, prefers to use other drugs instead

Just stop! eat loads of food, put on about a stone and a half in under a month then join a fitness club and take another 6 months to lose what only took you 3 weeks to put on. Become an anti-social misery guts (because nearly everyone you know smokes so you don't leave the house) but find another healthier addiction like exercise where you make lots of new friends who like you hate smokers! That's what I did anyhow!!! Oh and I ate loads of those sugar-free cremosa lollipops. Yummy!

(also what I did was tell myself I could smoke if I wanted to, and that I could have one before I go to bed, but then choose not to smoke that one cigarette. Sounds a bit complicated but that way you are just saying no to one fag as opposed to 15-20 or however many you smoke a day.)

Oh and when you stop you can watch those adverts on Tv without feeling guilty about killing others with your passive smoke or making any children in your presence look like ickle pff the magic dragons or worrying that you stink, then you can say to someone who smokes and get on your nerves ''if you smoke you stink'' and think you are better than everyone you know who smokes :D

i must admit HD I agree with your logic about you can have one but choice not to have one. I still love the smell of them and have a pack and a cigar on my sideboard that are there if I want one ,,, but never have in the last year or so

Never even tried it, never will and don't partuicularly like it but I'll never moan and lecture people who do, their choice.

I smoke now and then, mainly when I drink. I used to smoke a lot when I was studying, all of my classmates smoked so it was a joined effort :-? I quit quite naturally after I graduated since my husband doesn't smoke, so I'm no help here. I just know it's hard and like many people said, it's different for everyone.

My dad found it easy to give up after smoking 40 a day for about 40 years, just decided enough was enough and hasn't smoked for five years, always been hugely impressed by him for that.

Off out to the boozer now to get covered in smoke :D

My Dad smoked when he was young, but had to do an overnight shift on Christmas Eve, and smoked a load of ciggies he'd been given for Christmas. He smoked so many that he felt sick and vile in the morning, and never smoked another one after that.

I've smoked an occasional ciggie in my youth, but now hate the smell of the things. I love bars and restaurants in Ireland now, cos it's illegal to smoke in them.

Anyway - good luck to all who are trying to give up, as it must be one of the hardest things in the world to do.
