Last year, here in Birmingham, they changed Christmas to Winterval.
Its absolutely disgusting.

Who complained about it being called Christmas? Nobody.

Non Christians dont find it in the slightest bit offensive.

Its just jobsworth councillors and advisors getting on their high-horses.

We embrace other religious festivals like Diwali etc without complaint.

The council spends millions on making sure we ALL have to know about Muslim festivals like Ramadam etc.

Since Christmas is essentially back to being a pagan winter festival, it's hard to have an opinion that will hold water. But I celebrate it as the birthday of Christ, I take exception to it being deemed to be an affront to other religions. I am very happy to respect the holidays/holy festivals of other religions.

I completely understand where how you people feel, but have to admit to more than a tiny snigger when I read that they called it Winterval.

Im not religious, but I am quite a spiritual and family minded person and I appreciate being able to spend a day with the people I care about the most and being able to be part of a happy and warm occasion. I spend Xmas day with my husband, children and in-laws, and they are the best bunch of people, and we have a proper family Christmas, where the kids play and the grown ups wear silly hats and have wrapping paper wars.

The adults have a family tombola each year and draw a name from the hat, to buy a present of a fixed price for. None of us are rich people and there are 5 grandchildren to buy for now (well, nieces and children for us, but grandchildren for an overstretched Grandma who is hosting the day anyway), and for us its not about the presents, so we just have one token gift each, which is given "from everyone" rather than lots of presents of different parts of the family. We each make a contribution to the food, but this is nominal, Minx in law doesnt like taking it, it makes her uncomfortable, so we just agree to whatever she says is fair and then buy stuff to add to the pile that we "just happened to see and get a couple of because they were cheap". She then exerts revenge by making a lucky dip with extra presents in for everyone. Its like a game of chess to see who can get away with it.

But you shouldnt be banning it, all religious festivals are worthy of marking, in my opinion. I dont feel that its hypocritical for me to want to celebrate Christmas because whilst I might not really have a handle on the old God thing, I do appreciate the ten commandments and see them as a reasonable standard of behaviour to live my life by. I also think that if a God does exist, then he would not be displeased with us having a family celebration and showing how much we appreciate each other.

I can see where people are coming from when they say they find Cristmas insulting In the respect that they might not believe in it. As far as I can remember I spend cristmas with my family every year and quite enjoy it. I wouldn't say that I am religious but I do like the festive period and I feel that different people could find it ofensive due to their religion. People are also more educated through school about the different religions and fesivals but we still don't hear that much about the other festivals that go on as there is not such a big deal made out of it as Christmas is so therefore it is more recognised within the society that we live in which is probably why more people are aware of it rather than the other festivals.

Its the PC twerps gone mad.

Theyve banned Baa Baa Black Sheep. Its now Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep!

Surely we should cater things for the masses, not the minority?

When have they banned "bah bah black sheep

I said this last year when the same dull argument came up!! Both sides of the argument is pathetic, the PC crowd who cares about this nonsense, and the anti-pc crowd who get aggravated!!

Honestly how does it affect your celebration of the festival in any way whatsoever

Stop whining and get on with it :D

tbh how much of this is pc-ness and how much of this is the middle class press over-reacting to something which fits in with their annual search to find something they can harumph about and say the country's going to the dogs an englishmens home is his castle etc etc??

Sometimes the cynic in me wonders if they actually know that they're causing more harm than good and creating cultural/racial tension TD. You said exactly what I was thinking! :-?
