Help needed please. My daughter has homework which I don't understand. :-? She has to draw lots of triangles, measure the angles and say something she has noticed about them all. She has said that all the angles add up to a number around 180 degrees, but in the dim depths of my not very mathmatical brain, I seem to vaguely remember some formula concerning angles. Is it something like the angles always add up to 180 degrees? Some of hers add up to slightly more, so I don't know if she has done it right and it is just her mother who is the doofus.

Can anyone help?

My two daughters say they should add up to 180 degrees...if they add up to more, then she's doing it wrong. 16 yr old daughter passed her Junior Cert maths last year...15 year old is taking higher maths for her Junior Cert this year...but it's all double dutch to me, as I got an F in Lower Maths in my Leaving Cert.

Blags I would need to take a course to understand the website that you posted, but thanks anyway for posting it for me.

Bboop yours says that all the angles in a triangle should add up to 180 degrees, so does that mean that she measured them wrong or that she drew them wrong.

Checking the question again, it just says to draw triangles, It doesn't say they have to be right angles.

Oh I hate maths.

ellie I can't tell without seeing. My guess is she measured them wrong. It depends how far out she is.

The sum of the three angles of a triangle is equal to 180 degrees.

A RIGHT triangle has one 90 degrees angle.
An OBTUSE triangle has one angle that is greater than 90 degrees
An ACUTE triangle has all three angles less than 90 degrees

Types of triangles

Thanks GG. I will get her working on it again, when she has finished her dinner. Unfortunately Mr ellie (who is usually the maths whizz) went for lunch (of the liquid variety) and is just garbling on about pythagorus or something.

Have had a thought... does it not depend on the type of triangle? Could that not help?

*If* I'm remembering correctly an isosceles triangle had two angles that were equal and one that was different and in an equilateral triangle they were all the same.

Mind you, if she's drawing them herself then they won't be the specific types I don't suppose. But yes - the degrees should definitely add up to 180 because I remember getting a triangle very early on in secondary school where it said stuff like if one angle is 60, the other is 70 what will the final be and stuff like that.

But I am dire at maths so my advice is not really worth listening too.

reading Bboops site again. Is it that only right triangles have to add up to 180 degrees. Her homework doesnt say to make sure that one angle in the triangle is a right angle.

I treble hate maths.
