I'm on my own this christmas for the first time ever. Kids are away and parents away too (they asked my permission in the summer and I said yes before you think they are heartless ;) )

I've had loads of invites to go to friends round here but wondering if I shouold do something completely different.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Nice ones please {@}

Well, you know I've always thought it'd be great to go somewhere completely different, preferably spending the day in the great outdoors - either in a country where Christmas is no big deal, or with other eccentrics who'd like to go hill walking before retiring to a cozy pub.

But I'd REALLY love to get involved in helping with something like THIS.

I think it'd be amazing, and anyone I've known who has done something similar goes back again and again. :-?

Thanks for that GG. I have wondered about doing some kind of voluntary work. It's certainly on my list of ideas. If I don't do it at Christmas there is still something that operates in this area well into January/Feb which happens most evenings for the homeless people round here which I have been involved in, in the past.

The Salvation Army here does a Christmas Day dinner and so on for people on their own etc., there could be something like that in your area.

You've got me thinking now. I'm sure we'll come up with something!

I was meaning how the arrangements were made then changed then changed again then seem to have gone back to the original but in a different format!

Basically I shall be at home alone singing ''all by myself'' Bridget Jones stylee {@}

Why not see it as a gift?

OK, I don't have kids and I'm sure it will be a bit weird not seeing them on the day, but what I like most about Christmas Day is the part when all the work's done and the rellies have gone home and it's just me, sitting on the sofa with a nice glass of something and a box of some luxurious chocolate...it happens so rarely. So maybe it could be a 'gift day to yourself' pampering/relaxing day.

Of course, people might come round anyway, or may invite you over to theirs but the point is, you can do what you want.

I think what I'm trying to say is Christmas Day can be whatever you want it to be...

Why don't you contact your local hospital and find out what they are doing for the children that have to spend Christmas day in hospital?

You might find yourself acting in the hospital panto or dressing like an elf and handing out Christmas presents!

I bet that would be a wonderful (and fulfilling) way to spend Christmas!

some great ideas here. Spex when I was a child my mum was a ward sister in a hospital. She never expected her staff to work Christmas day without doing so herself so we used to go into hospital every single year. I have spent many a year eating hospital food on Christmas day. Every effort was made to send as many people home on Christmas day ut of course there were always those who were too ill to go. My mother was (and still is) determined to teach us there were always people less fortunate than ourselves. I never minded though. We as children just accepted that, that was the way it was and mum always made sure Father Chistmas left us an extra gift at the hospital ready for when we arrived. Goodness I had forgotten all about that! I always remember getting a silver necklace with an S on it. I was delighted with it. @^@
