Finally thinking about getting a laptop. I don't want a Mac or anything too sophisticated. What I think I need is as follows:

It can deal with my digital photos
It can do iTunes
It has a wireless thingy
It can play/burn dvds or I can select photos to save to disc

Erm, I do probably need more than just that, but that would be handy.

Any (simple) advice?

I got my advent labtop from pc world and its really good. Only advice i would give is dont go with orange broadband. I can burn dvds and it has a bulit in wireless and it can do i tunes and save pictures from a digital camera. Only thing is that it is a bit big to carry around

Also checkout http://www.misco.co.uk

Again the always have good deals.

And http://www.play.com.

Find the model that does what you want and then check the sites to see who is offering the best price.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro which I do all my surfing on. It's wireless it has at least a CDR writer and DVD Rom but I don't think this model has the DVD writer. It runs XP Home Edition and has a 15.4 inch display.
And a 1.7GHz Centrino processor.
It's not the fastest but was one of the cheapest at the time.

I'd recommend XP over Vista any day. At least Microsoft can't remove programs they don't think you should be using and the OS isn't slowed down with endless anti-piracy routines that'll screw up every Hi-def dvd film to try to watch thanks to an agreement with the Hollywood film producers.

I have an HP 510 from PC World, it does everything on your list, it was fairly cheap (under £450) and it's quite light to carry around as well.

A friend of mine has one of those tiny little laptops that you carry around and then plug into your main PC at home so that info goes onto both, but even though the mini-laptop's dead cool, and initially I wanted one, apparently they're bad for your eyes if you use them all the time.

Thanks very much. I've heard that I need to avoid Vista right enough and I'm happy with XP so will try to ensure I get that...

You haven't.

I think the laptop we had was Dell (never got to see much of it, it lived in daughter's bedroom), and it broke after less than 2 years...not overly impressed with it.

Mind you, this old dinosaur I'm on is also Dell - it had a health-check last spring, and we were told it maybe only had months to go...it's still going...thankfully.

Have ordered a Dell - at least the computer man has on my behalf. I think it'll do me fine. And I'm not having any of this Vista nonsense either lol!
