well Im really in two minds on this lyns

am disturbed in a way that if they win these women can just go ahead and bring a baby into the world wether the father wants it or not (I suppose leagally if he doesnt he wont be financially responisble) but he would still be morally responisble

then on the other hand if these women have been in long stable relationships at the time their bio clock is ticking and the embryos were stored so they could ensure conception and then the relationship goes west then I have sympathy for them

it goes without saying that couples who store embryos due to illness and the partner dies the woman should be allowed to proceed but still very much undecided on the other

I have sympathy for these women, but I think the mens views should come into this.

Its not about sperm donation or finacial matters, these women will be baring their children. A father should have the right to choose who concives his child if that is what he wishes. After all it will be his child as well whether the women see it as that or not.

The women if that desperate could use sperm donars and enter IVF that way.

I think i'm having a thick day anyway!!! Surely if the embryos belong to the women in the first place, what would the man have to do with it, aren't the eggs just frozen or am i being a complete plank? Did the eggs have sperm in them, is that why its an embryo? Help me, Its a long time since I did biology  I just thought Embryo = egg, not egg injected with sperm!!!

an embryo is a fertalised egg, the embryo grows into the foetus.

So yes the egg and sperm has both been used.

It should be pointed out that these women used the last of their eggs on starting the fertility program with their ex partners, but I still think the father has an equal say.

Also one of the women already has a teenage child. If desperate for children there are thousands of children in need of adoption or even fostering.

Thanks for the biology lesson JB  !!!

i bet the women are really kicking themselves that they didnt get just their unfertilised eggs frozen too!!!

I think yes, the father should have a say if his sperm has been used, damn right. And the women shouldn't have been blinded by their love for these men in the first place!!! Even if each side had 'committed', it doesnt mean they would have lasted forever.

Perhaps the sprem, and the eggs should have been frozen seperately??

I'm a bit confused as to why they weren't used at the time?

its sad really - one of the women had ovarian cancer and need urgent op and chemotherapy they didnt know at the time if they could save her ovaries and her relationship was stable - so hence she had her eggs taken and embryos were stored. they had to remove her ovaries since then her husband and her have split he has moved on but those eggs are her last chance

the other lady was having ivf treatment got ill so was halted and then her and her husband split it is this lady that has the teenage daughter

its a sad story isnt it but still have my doubts about this

I have to say that the men in this case should have a right to say no ....even tho this might mean the women not having children.

The one I feel sorry for is the one who hasn't had children already...but as JB said adoption or fostering is an option. If you haven't given birth then you can give that love to one that needs it.

How would any of us feel if someone was able to create a kid just cos we had a relationship with them.
You would either have to have contact with mother and kid or have it blight your life and this could lead to emotional problems for the child.."Why didn't daddy want me???"

It's hard but men have rights too.

I agree with Jonnyboy the father should have rights whether he wants a child of his to be brought in to this world or not. Also one has to think wouldn't the child protection agency be knocking on his door to contribute for the childs upbringing even though he didn't want the child in the first place.

yes its a real can of worms and sad for the women but the rights of the father should be respected and have been by the court decision

I wouldn't want to have my ex's baby anyway but that's easy for me to say because I have three kids. I understand how hard it must be for the two women tho, I can't imagine what it must be like to know you will never have a biological child of your own. There are too many complications in all of this, I agree with Ally that it wouldn't be fair on the child to not have any contact with it's Father. I also agree with Jon that there are thousands of children in need of a loving home. I only know that when it was announced on the news that the women had failed my first thought was "good" so I obviously come down on the side of not allowing it!

God I'm talking s**t today! Must exercise brain... must exercise brain.... any ideas anyone?

Couldn't the courts rule that the mothers must sign a contract to say they're babies were made from sperm donors and they don't know who the father is??? If they say anything to the child ever, they go to prison and the child gets taken away??

Harsh, but then everyone would have what they want. The dads have no responsibility and the mums get a baby. BUT, adopting is an option, i know that, but 2 people in my office are going through IVF treatment at the moment. All they want are children of their own, so I can kind of see it from all angles. I don't know, you never know how you would feel unless you were in that situation!!!
