As we all know there is a massive shortage of organ donor's, I personaly cant see the problem of giving an organ when you die, after all you wont be needing them any more.

I wonder if it would be better to change things around, instead of carrying a card to say you do want to donate, what about carrying a card saying you dont want to donate. I know it may seem horrible but if you cant be bothered to get a card, or forget or something then you organs will be taken automaticaly. That way hundreds of more lives will be saved, young and old. I agree with you Susie, although I wouldnt like to see organs taken without permission.

I had my Kidney transplant in 1984 after being on dialysis for a long time..I liked the idea that it was gift, and always think of the family who thought to save another life even though they themselves were grieving.

I know far too many people who havent survivied the wait or who are still waiting...but I do appriciate that some people find the idea of donating unthinkable and would like to see their veiws continue to be respected.

Where can you get the cards from? I've always wanted one because I think it's a good thing if you can help somebody

You know if you carry a card but if you did die like out of the blue and your parents didn't want it to happen what would happen?

I think your next of kin (parents ) have to agree first, even if you are carrying a card...

...it's always best to discuss it with your family before you make the decision to cary the card, so everyone is clear about everyone elses wishes.

Hope that helps

:D

Rosemary, if your over 18 and you carry a card and havent told any family members, do they still have to ask their permission to take your organs?

Madeline, I agree, I would like to leave my body to medical science, I just dont like the idea of my family broken hearted seeing me either being buried or cremated, although I would choose to be cremated.

I'm pretty sure Susie, that no matter what age, even if a person carries a card, nothing will be removed without the agreement of the surviving relatives.
A card just indicates the person carrying it's wishes.

Susie I agree that opting out is a much better way to go. Jezi your next of kin has to agree so it's always a good idea to talk to them about your wishes first. My family all know it's what I want and, God forbid, if anything happened to any of my family I would agree.

I agree with Rosemary, i belivee next of kin do still have to agree - so *always* discuss your choice with family.

my (old fashioned!) driving licence has an organ donor section on it.
