Actually the bookies need to be taken out and shot... twice.

First this weeks nominations are leaked just an hour after they are cast by the HM's. Next I hear the bookies are being hit by some unusually large bets for Jonny (still before any official announcement). Then the bookies have been telling us all week to bet for Sophie... 'free money' I think the camel coated runner said on the Ch4 website.

Now call me stupid... but aren't they just trying to spread the bet to cover any large payout on a 'surprise' Jonny eviction? What if they are telling people to punt for Sophie but secretly hammering the eviction number for Jonny? Either way, the bookies don't lose. They and their gambling pals win everytime and the public are left to fund it all. The whole thing stinks!

John,

You seem to have been taken in by the idea that the bookies have fixed the whole thing. The stories in the press are about scams are complete rubbish. Work it out for yourself - bookies only accept small bets on big brother (most bookies maximum bets on it are between £25-£50) and the total number of bets on it is small compared to the number of bets they take on football or horseracing.

In most weekly evictions there are well over a million phonecalls - last week there were over 2.75m calls. At 25p per call, that would take far more money to fix than than all bookies put together stand to make out of it, or all people betting on it put together stand to make out of it.

It would not be economically viable to do so.

the reason such stories keep surfacing is threefold - 1. The tabloids like sensational stories and have little else to write about. 2. Most bookies are not paying enough attention to live updates or E4 - they are basing their odds on what happens in the C4 show, which as we know is a day behind. People who some of these bookies are claiming are in the know are simply paying more attention to what is going on than they are. 3. Rather than admit they have got their odds wrong, and being aware that the tabloids love claims of fixes where big brother is concerned, they seek to get a bit of publicity for their companies by claiming fix.

In any case, all bookies suspend eviction betting from the moment the housemates start nominating on Monday until they are announced the following day. So, it is impossible for anyone to place a bet at this time, even if they did get leaked info about who had been nominated.

Nothing stinks, you are just obsessed with this incorrect notion that somehow it is fixed and in response to your own comment I am tempted to call you stupid.

Sophie will go tonight - take a look at every poll out there on the internet and you will see that she is expected to get between 75-80% of the vote. Nothing the bookies could do would change this.

Not obsessed - far from it - just curious, thoughtful and mindful of all the possibilities. But yes, stink it certainly does...

Here's the word from Channel 4's Official Bookmaker; "Jonny is a 9/2 shot and, while some people are betting on him to leave, most are betting on Sophie in an attempt to buy some easy money."

http://www.channel4.com/apps3/bigbrothe ... sp?id=7886

Oh incidentally, 75-80% share of the vote... are these the same polls who were predicting a 90-95% share earlier this week? Could it be that Jonny has lost some support? Might it not be the walk over the bookies would have us believe?

I have never gambled in my life but I'll wager a quick search of the internet will turn up stories of bookmaking/betting scams that are legion as they are long.

John,

It only stinks if there actually is a scam. There isn't. I've seen you post several times over the last few weeks about how its so obviously been a bookies fix, hence it seems you have made your mind up that it is.

The reality is that stories about fixes (with regard to BB) are simply bookies trying to get cheap publicity by claiming so and tabloids with nothing better to write about.

Since the 2 nominees were announced the opinion polls have always been between 76-85%, never as high as 90-95% of the vote for Sophie. Sure, there has been a slight swing away from Jonny, but not nearly enough for the outcome to change. This swing has been due to sympathy for Sophie due to C4 editing of her victimisation by Jade, nothing else.

Fixing the vote by voting at 25p per call is just not economically viable.

I suggest you read the thread about bookies fixing which had several posts to it

I have no ulterior motive, I am simply trying to put a stop to these ridiculous claims.

If you like conspiracy theories then carry on with your belief that something stinks, but if you come to your senses you'll realise its all a loads of bollocks.

BBbookie... I hold that it is YOU who has made up their mind.

I've contributed a couple of musings over the past week BUT prior to that there are numerous postings from me with a definate anti 'conspiracy theory' bent. Maybe you should go read them before you tar and feather me?

I think you're quite right to provide an alternative view and I'd normally be the first to agree with your position. It doesn't take a genius to work out that bookmakers rig the odds in their favour in the same way that casino's 'cream off' a percentage for themselves. They are businesses after all and I've no problem with them doing this.

Where my opinion is being changed, is from seeing accounts of people placing 100+ calls, internet polls being rigged and other activities that makes you wonder why anyone would go to the effort... unless there were a finacial incentive perhaps?

I don't have the answers, just a growing suspicion and an increasing malaise about the eviction process.

John,

With all due respect, when you say the boookies should be shot (twice), how do you expect me to react? When you said that it was quite clear you that you had made your mind up who the culprits are and that you think there is something dodgy going on. the only dodgy thing going on is public opinion. Winning by betting on Big Brother is all about judging public opinion, not questioning it, nor by anything being fixed.

I'm sorry if I have not been aware of all your posts, I was only commenting on the ones I have seen, all of which were putting forward the theory that the whole thing was rigged and pointing the blame firmly at the bookies for it.

As you have never placed a bet in your life, perhaps this is why you are clearly ignoring my highly salient points which show why it is not, as you have suggested being fixed in any way.

I'm off home now so will not be posting again today.

Okay... okay... I stand corrected. The Bookies should only be shot once... for providing this wonderful quote; "the only dodgy thing going on is public opinion."

And I didn't 'expect' you to react, full stop! Until you replied to my post I'd never even heard of you, much less entertained a notion that you'd be displeased in some way.

My original contention was... and still is... that whether there is a fix or not, the bookies always win and the poor old public pays for it. Personally, I'd like to see the bookies stop taking bets on the actual evictions as I think it encourages people to abuse the system. I've stopped voting and I'm certain others will follow in this and future BB's.
