Jade's salon shuts
MILLIONAIRE Jade Goody, above, closed her Hertford beauty salon Ugly's this week, after just over a year in the county town.
The Big Brother star pumped £50,000 into the Market Street shop, which opened last September. But she was up against stiff competition from more than a dozen other hair and beauty salons in Hertford and reports suggested hers was not making enough money.
In June, however, Jade told the Mercury she was considering expanding Ugly's into the Corn Exchange. She said that because the salon, which is part of the grade II listed building in Fore Street, was doing so well it could cope with larger premises.
Jade opened the salon with her friend Carly Walpole. Their venture was followed on the Living TV programme Jade's Salon.
She told the Mercury it was a "dream come true", but soon after moving in her father died from a drugs overdose and, on the day of his funeral, she collapsed in the salon with stomach pains and was rushed to hospital. She later crashed her car.
Neither Jade nor Carly was available for comment yesterday (Thursday, 05 October).
Town centre manager John Barber said: "It's a shame she's gone."
