This most enjoyable family show owes such a lot to its enthusiastic and talented cast who work splendidly as a team. Lisa Riley is quite a revelation and is the real driving force behind this show, in the role of Fairy Peapod. She makes an impact from her very first entrance and it continues thoughout the production. When given the opportunity she also sings well.
This Simon Barry production could be even more effective if the first half was pruned. It is a little too long and one or two obvious items could be removed without being missed. There is so much opportunity for audience participation and this is eagerly anticipated and celebrated.
Craig Phillips is a rarity - a Big Brother winner who does not look out of place in a pantomime. Carl Johns is an excellent Simple Simon and he plays it with so much energy. Paul Parris, as Jack Trott, is very effective and Graham Ashe, as Tilly Trott, makes his mark and is visibly aided by some wonderful costumes. Tony Adams takes the role of King Willy in his stride.
Jasmine Darke delights as Witch Blackweed and her sidekick, Igor, is a new type of role for the versatile Alan Jenkins. Filipa Jeronimo (Princess Jill) makes a real impact with her version of Unexpected Song. Much credit is also due to the Iris Barnes Dancers and the talented musical trio of Teresa Barlow, Tim Marshall and Ian Nash.
Another winner from the Kings Theatre, a marvelous venue that was thankfully saved from extinction just a few years ago. 2007 is its centenary year.
