"In my opinion, Kate Lawler is on the way to becoming the biggest female dj in the country, with passion, musical credibility and understanding of how to rock a party. She is my tip for the top. Go to one of her gigs and draw your own opinion."

Oh right-no pressure then. :x

Hmmm... The Ministry of Sound on board - toldya!

Fair play to Kate - & another great interview - cheers Rince.

Pity Kate didn't dismiss Russell 'unfunny' Brand & his Jade-loving cronies.

Another interview:

KATE LAWLER has just polished off a whole packet of Jaffa Cakes and is feeling just a little bit guilty for it.

"Ive had to start going to see my old personal trainer Joe, who is into cage fighting and is really hardcore. Im hoping to try to get back into shape again for the summer," she laughs.

But the former Big Brother winner will soon be consoling herself with a night out on the town with a few girlfriends as she prepares to DJ in Birmingham.

Its a slightly unlikely career move for the presenter-turned-glamour model, but one she appears to be taking to in fine style having played a number of prestigious nightclubs.

While she admits theres still more to learn in terms of mixing skills, she has made plenty of progress, locking herself away to practise for six months in 2005.

Becoming accepted in such an image-conscious industry has had its frustrations for her at times. But she is definitely winning crowds over with her favoured electro and house tunes.

"Ive got to do some cool gigs and am really excited about this year as I have a residency at Sankeys club in Manchester which has a great atmosphere."

The switch has taken her to some exotic venues and she has ventured as far afield as Japan which proved one of her most memorable shows to date. Kate had previously spent time over there with her former boyfriend and was glad of the chance to revisit the frantic, bright lights of Tokyo.

"Id only been DJing for a few months when I did that but It was great to be back there. They were mental over there for that night. I quickly realised they were going to get a lot more into it if I was jumping around and dancing with them too - I ended up with someones bike helmet on my head!"

Shes clearly come a long way from her teenage days in Beckenham making mix tapes of the latest House tracks for her mates in preparation for the weekend.

Growing up in "Nam" as she fondly calls it was a positive experience for her non-identical twin sister Karen. It was her who persuaded Kate, who had been working in IT for an investment bank, to go for Big Brother.

"Karen is such a TV addict and was my biggest fan when I was in the house and wouldnt have a bad word said about me. Im excited as shes having a baby just after our birthday in May, so Ill be Auntie Kate!

"It seems like a lifetime since Big Brother. I dont regret doing it has certainly helped give me a profile with my DJing. The only people Im really in touch with from the house are Jonny, Alex and PJ."

Unlike many who have passed through C4s house of horrors, TV work has been in regular supply. Morning chat show RISE, Love Island and Celebrity Wrestling have all come her way which have been fun sidelines for her. Then theres the modelling for Ann Summers alongside Kents Nancy Sorrell, wife of Vic Reeves.

"That was fun and I really enjoyed working with Nancy who is a good friend of mine."

Outside of work, the 26-year-old, who still lives in Beckenham, feels shes "quite boring", which is hard to believe. For her, a trip to the gym and a decent party with friends is enough to keep her happy. She was engaged to England footballer Jonathan Woodgate, but split owing to his being abroad playing for Real Madrid.

"Ive been single for a couple of years now - its a bit depressing to be honest," she adds.

"I would like a boyfriend but there are no decent men in England. Thats why Ive become a DJ to travel and find some guys abroad! Are you single?" jokes Kate.

Perhaps I need my head examining, but in very English fashion I explain that although a night out in the Midlands with a bevy of glamorous girls sounds just dandy, Im not sure Im quite in their celebrity league.

But I might just have to venture down to say hello at Kates night headlining at the Manor Club in Chatham.

"Im excited about playing in Chatham," she says. "Ive got friends down there who will be coming to the gig. There will be some dirty house beats, so be prepared!"

Kate Lawler appears at the Manor Club, New Road, Chatham, on Saturday, March 17. Tickets 10. Box office 08070 2462050.

Thanks for that Rincewind ()^

I am sure she will make a great Auntie!

I am surprised that she is still in touch with Alex, especially after all the feuds we had on here between Kate and Alex fans - it's obviously not the same between Kate and Alex themselves!

Oh Dear - behave yourself, Vilt.

As I said before, Norman Cook was mesmerised by Kate on BB3.

And as the coolest can see on Kate's MySpace page - Radio 1's Mistress De Funk is one of Kate's biggest supporters.

Good list of dates there Vilt, still wondering if she is going to i-beef-a for a prolonged stint, there's a bit of a gap in May.

In other news it seems she has got a radio slot with the Ministry-of-sound. Pretty cred I would of thought, but I'm not really an expert {@}

Ministryofsound

A bit of a turnaround really, considering they were slagging her off on this site, not that long ago :D

Sugar babes Posh the button
05 April 2007

FUNKY house/R&B promoter extraordinaire George D launches a new weekly branch of his popular Posh Funk brand at the luxurious Sugar Hut Village, Brentwood, on Wednesday night.

And I'll be playing soul, jazz funk and disco in the third room every week.

East Londoner George cut his teeth as a DJ back in the mid-'90s at Epping Forest Country Club, after winning a Club Mix- sponsored DJ competition, and went on to be resident there for six years.

Since then his weekly Sunday Sessions parties at Faces, Gants Hill, and one-off Sex In The City events have cemented his reputation.

On Good Friday, he hosts The Mad Hatters Ball at Ministry of Sound, with three rooms of funky house, old skool and R&B.

Still one of the main DJs at all his events, his Posh Funk Saturday-nighter at CC Club in Piccadilly Circus has become his flagship event since its inception two years ago.

He'll be joined as resident of the new Posh Funk Brentwood operation by loyal jocks Tony Nicholls, Vernon James, plus me.

Celebrity guests lined up include Fran Cosgrove, Kate Lawler, Dane Bowers and Simon Webbe from Blue.

Sugar Hut Village, which has a sister venue in Fulham, is co-owned by former Hollywood and Club UK owner Chris George, so I'm looking forward to catching up with the veteran club owner, who revolutionised clubbing in east London in the early '90s and whose events were so heavily featured in Club Mix throughout that decade.

Regulars at the Fulham venue include superstar A-listers like Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman, and Princes William and Harry, quite fitting considering that the Brentwood site (formerly the White Hart Inn) is thought to date back to the 1300s when King Edward II is believed to have stayed there.

Now the town's premier venue, and one of the most luxurious in Essex and indeed London, Sugar Hut has forged an exclusive reputation. Drinks are usually priced at the top end of the market, but every Wednesday house brands will be just £2 all night, with admission £5 before 10pm, and £7 after. Entry is for strictly 18s over and the dress code is glam.

For guest list and table reservations call 07946 934352 or email info@poshfunk.com. Otherwise go to http://www.poshfunk.com or http://www.myspace.com/poshfunkevents.

Tickets for The Mad Hatters Easter Ball on Friday are priced at £25 and are available from http://www.ticketbank.co.uk or by calling 01702 345050.

Sunday Sessions is scheduled to return to Faces on Sunday April 28. Check http://www.sunday-sessions.co.uk

Great to have The Ministry of Sound on board - at last! - but Kate deserves it.
Their earlier comment about Kate's emergence on the dance scene was pretty naive & misinformed. And Kate has Mark Knight fighting in her corner.

Kate's DJ career has been everything but half-hearted. She has travelled the length & breadth of the country to prove herself.
By the end of this year she will have probably done over 200 gigs in two years.

She has told promoters never to use 'Big Brother' on her posters/promotion publicity.

Although 'Big Brother' has been a help to Kate, it has also been a hindrance - highlighted in the last two Kate interviews on this thread.
I don't think Kate helped herself by appearing on 'Love Island', as I've said before, but she lives in two worlds where she appears in the tabloids/seleb press because she won BB, & the club world where credibilty & coolness are everything.

As anybody who takes a gander at dance/club forums will know, those(few) that slate Kate do so because of Big Brother & the whole hype about the programme. They assume Kate is just another Big Brother wannabe, & so on. That is not Kate's fault. And it's certainly not Kate's fault that someone as hideous and naff as Jade became a overhyped, overpaid, overexposed national moron - it was Kate who highlighted how pathetic Jade was in BB3.
Kate always gets positive comment from those who've actually been to one of her gigs.

The list of top DJs & respected orgs like The Ministry of Sound who support Kate continues to grow.

Kate's dates & plans for Ibiza this year are starting to appear on her website.
