Jade Goody - Max Clifford
Jade Goody’s publicist Max Clifford said today that if her condition continued to worsen he would tell her that “enough is enough” and she should withdraw from the public eye.
Goody, who is terminally ill with cancer, is recovering in London’s Royal Marsden Hospital following emergency surgery to relieve pain in her bowel.
Speaking to TalkSport, Clifford said: “My attitude to Jade in recent times is: ’Don’t you think enough is enough? Don’t you think you’ve got the message out there?
“’The money that you wanted for the boys we’ve done, we’ve made, it’s in place, the money is assured’.
“We’re hoping that the operation she had on Monday evening will make things a lot more bearable, a lot brighter for her in the weeks ahead...
“Jade likes and enjoys the media spotlight. You have to marry all of these things.
“But if she continues to be in the kind of pain and condition she is in then my advice increasingly will be: ’Don’t you think enough is enough?”’
He said that in the last week or two he had been saying to Goody: “The minute you don’t want them taking pictures, I’ll ask them not to take pictures so do let me know.”
He said: “I spoke to her yesterday and said: ’Look, when you’re leaving the Chelsea and Westminster there are photographers out there, do you want me to tell them not to take any photos?’
“And she said: ’No Max, I’m happy to do a photo as long its going to take a couple of seconds’.
“’Are you sure?’ I said.
“’Yes, absolutely,’ she said. ’I don’t want to stop them’.”
Speaking to Andy Townsend and Mike Parry on the Townsend and Parry Show, Parry asked Clifford if he felt uneasy about the voyeurism surrounding Goody remaining in the media spotlight.
“Instinctively, yes,” Clifford said.
Asked by Parry what would happen when Goody was no longer able to make decisions about publicity for herself, Clifford said: “The reality is there is a balance because there’s huge public interest and an appetite and support for Jade, which is reflected by the fact that it’s front page news virtually every day.
“I think that the time will come. But so much of it has got to be guided by her because it’s her life and it’s for her to decide.
“But of course if she’s not well enough to make that decision then I will make that decision for her automatically.
“I’m having conversations with her on a daily basis, when she’s not sedated, and she’s making it perfectly clear the way she wants to do things.
“The fact of the matter is that she only has a short time to live. You have to take on board that it’s her life; she’s lived her life in the media spotlight for seven years.
What about the fact that Jade Goody's mind has been warped by this ridiculous 'celebrity' promotion over the years in the most patronising way, highlighted by the fact that the cancer diagnosis was filmed disgracefully on India's Big Brother(though not shown).
Where was the person to tell Jade Goody to remove herself from any kind of promotion?
I think a dreadful mistake has been made here - Jade Goody & Max Clifford thought they could re-promote a 'celebrity' - but something as serious and unpredictable as cancer
cannot ever be used for such a perfunctory purpose.
No wonder, apart from the tabloids & celeb magazines who have their own agenda, were the likes of Davina McCall & all those who've eulogised Jade Goody over the years absent from her wedding.
The real tragedy is a young woman is going to die - & many in the media are uncomfortable about this hype.
