Vic Reeves and his wife Nancy Sorrell have opened a giraffe house in Kent which the comedian personally funded.

The 46-year-old donated £70,000 from his appearances on I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! and a celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire to pay for the building at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, near Hythe.

As he unveiled a silver plaque at the official opening ceremony which read "The Vic Reeves Giraffe House", he said: "Welcome to my new giraffe house ... it's my first and hopefully not my last.

"It's great! I couldn't keep them in the house at home because they were too tall so I had this built."

He added: "They are incredible animals and I would urge everyone to come down and see them ... see the way they glide on land."

Vic and Nancy, who have recently returned from filming a programme about tapirs in the Costa Rica rain forest, shared a joke with reporters about the cold wet Kent weather.

The couple, who live in nearby Lenham, then fed willow to two 12ft two-year-old giraffes called Cillion and Settanta.

Nancy said of her husband: "I am very proud of him. It must be lovely to have your name there. It should have lights over it."
