Former East 17 star Brian Harvey remains in a critical condition in hospital after falling under the wheels of his own car, police said.

The troubled singer was crushed beneath his Mercedes convertible in what his manager described as a "bizarre" accident as he drove to a recording session.

Harvey, 30, who is alleged to have made two attempts on his own life, suffered multiple fractures to his legs and pelvis.

He was said to be undergoing emergency surgery and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Whipps Cross Hospital in east London.

Simon Harrison, the singer's manager, told the ITV News Channel the accident happened as Harvey drove through Chingford, Essex.

He said: "He was on his way to a studio session and from what we know... he was reversing down a road in his own car with the door open, hit a number of parked vehicles and was actually thrown from his car.

"We presume at the moment he was actually crushed under his own car or against another car. It's all a little bizarre but that's what we know has happened."

Police said no-one else was in the vehicle. Mr Harrison said: "There's been breaks to his legs, six breaks to his pelvis, injuries to his ribs, his lungs and his abdomen.

"He's been in intensive care all day. There's been a number of operations and I believe he's still in the operating theatre as we speak."

Asked if he knew if the accident may have been a suicide attempt, Mr Harrison said: "I don't, but knowing Brian this certainly wouldn't be the way he attempted a suicide, reversing down a road, you know, I just don't see it, I think this is purely an accident."

Post subject:  UPDATE: Harvey has throat surgery

Thursday, 9 June, 2005

Former pop star Brian Harvey has had a throat operation more than a week after being seriously injured under the wheels of his own car.
Harvey had a tracheotomy on Wednesday to help him breathe and drain fluid from his lungs, his manager said.

The former East 17 singer, 30, has been kept unconscious with medication since the accident. But doctors hope to wake him soon, according to Simon Harrison.

Mr Harrison said the tracheotomy was "more precautionary than emergency".

"He's still in intensive care, he's still on a ventilator helping him breathe," he said.

They're keeping him heavily sedated and asleep with medication

"It's a very, very slow process. He hasn't moved, he hasn't spoken, and he's been unconscious all this time."

The operation was performed after X-rays showed fluid on his lungs. Doctors are still examining the X-rays for any further injuries.

"They're keeping him heavily sedated and asleep with medication," Mr Harrison added.

But medical staff are expected to try to bring him round. "They did try and do this about a week ago and it made him very violently ill so they put him back under."

Harvey suffered injuries to his leg, pelvis, abdomen and ribs in the accident in the early hours of 31 May.

Police said he appeared to have been reversing down an access road with the door of his convertible open when he hit another car, was thrown out and crushed.

Press reports said he had attempted suicide twice that month.

Mr Harrison has said Harvey had been depressed but was in a "very good" state of mind immediately before the accident.
