Comedy was providing a talking point for the celebrity jungle dwellers, with the unintentionally funny Sid and Ant tapping Tommy Cannon for funny fodder.
“Did you used to write your own stuff?” Ant asked Tommy, phrasing the question in the past tense.
“Yeah,” said Tommy. Sid Green used to write for them as well, he added. “He used to write for Morecambe and Wise too.”
Ant is impressed. “Wow!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah,” said Tommy, who was clearly distressed that the conversation was moving away from his own career to that of a rival comedy act.
So, at this point, did Ant realise that he had accidentally peed Cannon off? No, of course not.
“You met them, didn’t you?” he continued. The hole he was digging was getting so deep he was in danger of coming back to Blighty via the Earth’s core.
“Morecombe & Wise? Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah,” Tommy reluctantly replied.
“They were good, they were,” Ant said.
There was no response from Tommy. So Sid chipped in to save the day.
“Did you see that Ronnie Barker thing?” he asked Cannon.
“Yeah. Hmm.”
“He was a genius, wasn’t he?”
Lucky Cannon’s not got a short fuse.
