Thatcher takes jungle seat with yet another landslide victoryBy Ben Hoyle and Nicola Woolcock

THE voters may have loved Baroness Thatcher, but her indomitable daughter Carol last night polled far more personal votes in one evening than her mother managed in 40 years in politics.

A delighted Ms Thatcher became the surprise victor of the fifth series of ITV’s I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here, an achievement that saw her crowned Queen of the Jungle and will provide a huge boost to her public profile.

All hail the old bird - Carol 'Thatch' Thatcher has been crowned Queen of the Jungle!

The I'm a Celebrity... ball-chomping squatter beat Sid Owen, who came third, and Sheree Murphy (2nd) to the prestigious title in the dullest-yet of the jungle-based japes.

But the "Iron Lady II" (Daily Star) says she's happy to take on the role.

The Daily Mirror trumps the Star, however, in the headline stakes, with the excellent "I Won Lady".

"I'm going to be very regal and very pompous," she boomed, promising to take her fellow campers off on a monumental p***-up when they're all together.

Worryingly, though, the Star warns us that record bosses are rushing to sign her up and release a Christmas single.

Say it isn't so. We still have nightmares about Mike 'DJ' Read and Lord Brocket turgid turd of a version of Jungle Rock when they were on the Ant 'n Dec love-in a couple of years back.

Well done the Thatch and that, although the sight of bland-blonde Jenny Frost basking in a bikini during her post-I'm A Celeb wind-down (again in the Star) is far more appealing than the ex-Prime Minister's affable sprog munching jungle gubbins.

But, hey, that's entertainment!

Carol Thatcher has been crowned queen of the jungle after triumphing in this year's I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! last night.

Thatch was the bookmakers' favourite to win after her no-fear attitude and down-to-earth personality rapidly earned her millions of fans.

And she duly lived up to their expectations by seeing off runner-up Sheree Murphy and third-placed Sid Owen last night.

The daughter of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher entered the jungle as a rank outsider and admitted before arriving that she really did not know what she was doing there.

But the affable woman, aged "the wrong side of 50" according to her, who frequently referred to herself on the show in the third person, was full of praise for her fellow contestants after being crowned and for the chance given to her to take part.

"I was very lucky with my fellow celebs and we were a very harmonious group. We all enjoyed it," she told presenters Ant and Dec.

She follows in the footsteps of previous winners Phil Tufnell, Kerry Katona and squeaky voiced comedian Joe Pasquale.

I'm A Celebrity - The Winner

Carol Thatcher has been crowned the queen of the jungle after winning ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

Carol entered the Australian rainforest insisting that, unlike her mother, she was no Iron Lady.

But the former prime minister's daughter has turned out to be exactly that.

Carol, 52, entered the ITV reality show as a 33-1 outsider to win the crown.

She made an unpromising start - throwing up on herself during a 12,000ft skydive into the jungle.

Carol retained her good humour throughout, even while eating kangaroo testicles and fish eyes.

She joked to Ant and Dec that "apparently they are better with balsamic vinegar".

Fame For Jungle Queen Carol

Newly-crowned jungle queen Carol Thatcher is expected to make a mint out of her new-found celebrity.

Having shown grit and a great sense of humour on I'm A Celebrity,'C Thatch' is now expected to write a book about the experience.

Some 13 million people watched her crowned queen of the jungle - almost a million more than watched last year's final.

Carol is thought to have made £40,000 from her three-week time in the Aussie Outback - and now a five-figure sum from a book, as well as a healthy amount of pocket money from TV appearances.

PR guru Max Clifford said: "This programme has given her a chance to be Carol Thatcher as opposed to Maggie Thatcher's daughter.

"With the right agent or manager there is no reason why she cannot make a minimum of £1m through TV appearances, various endorsements and possibly even a book."

Carol, 52, retained her good humour despite eating a kangaroo's testicles (apparently "better with balsamic vinegar"), puking over herself after a skydive into the camp and being caught on camera weeing next to her own hammock.

Having entered as a 33-1 outsider, Carol's win has cost bookies (who decided she was a "real no-hoper") some £250,000.

After winning, she told Ant and Dec: "I said the other day I would be amazed, astonished and gobsmacked if I won. I'm all three of these to the power of 100.

"I was very lucky with my fellow celebrities, we all thoroughly enjoyed it. It has been a life-enhancing experience."

Runner-up Sheree Murphy is believed to have signed a magazine deal for an 'at home' feature with football star husband Harry Kewell and their two children.

The Bill and Footballers' Wives bosses are said to be keen on signing up third-placed Sid Owen.

Having only seen a wee bit of the show I can't really comment but the one part I did see when she was eating all those vile things made her look like a pretty deserving winner.

Do people forget that Sheree was an actress lets face it for someone with her "phobias" she seemed completely unphased by her final trial!

Obo, I think Sheree was more vocal about her phobias then some of the others. I have often thought I would not be able to do something or fancy eating a certain food offered to me but surprised myself when I did overcome my phobias, just like I imagine Sheree and other celebs that have taken part in the show did. I thought a lot of the celebs had a look of fear/distaste when they were doing their BT but never said anything because they wanted to appear brave or even an iron Lady/Man to win votes.

IN RETROSPECT, it was a sure bet. If you have survived as the daughter of the most controversial prime minister of the 20th century, if you have shared a gene pool with a twin who attracts scandal like blood attracts sharks, if you have had your heart broken by Jonathan Aitken, then surviving 16 days in the Australian outback, sharing a pool with the assorted pond-life of I'm a Celebrity and coping with reptiles was never going to faze Carol Thatcher.

On Monday night the daughter of Baroness Thatcher achieved what some believe was her mother's ultimate ambition. She was crowned queen. Defying the odds, Carol Thatcher won the fifth series of ITV's reality show I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here, seeing off the ex-Emmerdale actress Sheree Murphy and former EastEnders star Sid Owen in a final watched by 13 million viewers.

It was an amazing turnaround in the fortunes of the 52-year-old journalist and author who had been as much of an underdog at the start of the series - she was a 33-1 outsider - as her mother had been in the Tory leadership contest of 1975. In the end she won the viewers round by sheer dint of personality. It was a combination of gumption, optimism, determination and experience which brought her the £50,000 prize. The publicity could net her a much bigger fortune in endorsements, advertising and broadcasting should she choose to cash in.

Friends say she could do with the money. She rents out her London flat and, although she was left £125,000 in her father's will, she has not had a full-time job since Max Hastings sacked her from the Daily Telegraph in 1986. Until recently, she lived with a 38 year-old ski instructor, Marco Grass, in Switzerland and she survives on her freelance earnings.
