Mark worries hurt mother - Thatcher

I'm A Celebrity 'Queen of the Jungle' Carol Thatcher has spoken of the "hurt and worry" caused to her mother by her twin brother's involvement in an alleged African coup.

She said Baroness Thatcher was upset at allegations against Mark in a plot to topple the dictator of Equatorial Guinea.

Her twin brother was convicted of funding mercenaries earlier this year in South Africa, and was given a four-year suspended prison sentence. He admitted buying a helicopter gunship which was to be used in the coup.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Carol, 52, said: "I was dismayed at the hurt and worry mum was suffering because of Mark's involvement in the Equatorial Guinea plot. I was annoyed with my brother for getting embroiled in it, but my concern was our mother.

"I know how terribly it worried her, and in her state of health it was far from helpful to have such a nagging anxiety always at the back of her mind.

"She didn't always remember what the charges against him were, but naturally people constantly asked her about them, which didn't help. She just sat and worried when she was on her own."

She added that she was not close with her brother as they had "quite different personalities and interests".

She said the pair don't talk to each other and she didn't know where he was currently living, saying she would have to "wait for a change of address card to arrive".

Carol defended her decision not to tell her mother she was taking part in the reality TV programme as she pointed out that Lady Thatcher had a "very poor short-term memory" and would have forgotten about it "almost immediately".

Lady Thatcher doesn't read much because she can't remember the beginning of the sentence by the time she reaches the end, she added. The memory loss was "incredibly frustrating" for her mother, who in the past she said could quote inflation statistics going back years without reference to a note.
