Katy Guest: Beware the love that 'just sort of happens' Perhaps Chantelle Houghton put it best when she tried to explain the particular brand of love at first sight that afflicts only a select, unfortunate few. "No one went out to hurt anyone," she said in 2006. "It just sort of happened. You could be married and go to the baker's because you're hungry and then fall in love with the baker." Chantelle was talking about her relationship with Samuel Preston, a 25-year-old singer whom she had met on the set of Celebrity Big Brother. He was not a baker (bakers turn out to be relatively safe from this category of romantic coup de foudre), but when they met he did have a long-term fiancée. In other words, Preston was married, he went to the baker's to buy pies for his starving beloved, but in an instant he was smitten by true love and never went home. It happens all the time – I mean, what kind of idiot would ever let their lover go to the baker's in this day and age? In this stumbling metaphor, Chanelle hit upon a very peculiar phenomenon. This week, the singer Cerys Matthews and the actor Marc Bannerman have discovered that they too have been struck the same blow. "I don't know what love at first sight is, but I had the most intense feeling," said the starry-eyed Bannerman after he met Cerys on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! He wouldn't be the first man to mistake indigestion for something more. "I fully intend to take it slowly," revealed Cerys, who is hoping to spend Christmas with Marc and is considering having his children. Bannerman's jilted fiancée, Sarah, says she hopes they both rot in hell. But he is "not a love rat", he insists. After all, "out of loyalty to Sarah I tried not to look at the girls in their bikinis." He was in love with two women, was his problem. If that's love, Cerys might have thought, give me indifference, please. There is something to do with reality TV shows that appears to act on their contestants like a combination of spring time, chocolate, sunlight on the pituitary gland and ecstasy tablets. Bannerman claims that his now former fiancée had encouraged him to go on the show to earn money to provide for their future. Is she mad? Or had she never watched one of these programmes before? What reality TV seems to be creating is a variation on Stockholm Syndrome, in which candidates fall intensely in love with their fellow hostages rather than their kidnappers. Is the body's natural reaction to stress and starvation purely sexual? Is it something about the lack of adequate shower facilities that brings out irresistible natural pheromones? Does the prospect of eating insects make them want to put someone else's tongue in their mouth instead, and quick? If Sarah has not learned the lessons of other, similar shows then neither, clearly, has Marc. He might not be predicting a lifelong union with Cerys had he watched this year's Big Brother. In that show, Ziggy declared love to Chanelle and then dumped her with the words: "It's not you, it's me." Has he not heard about all the other instant love affairs? Will anyone be able to use the word "soul-mate" again now that it has been so devalued? And has Marc not read any newspapers this year? If he had he, might have noticed that Preston and Chantelle recently split up after 10 months of marriage. Sometimes, you do fall in love with the baker. But anyone who commits on the spot to locking himself in and then eating doughnuts for a year is going to end up being sick. Independent |

CERYS AND MARC SNEAK OFF FOR LOVE I’M A Celeb lovers Cerys Matthews and Marc Bannerman re-ignited their jungle passions with a three-day sex fest. The pair – who fell for each other last month on the ITV show – were “all over each other” during Marc’s first visit to Cerys’s Welsh home. The cottage where they stayed even had the word “shag” in its name. The couple headed to the lovenest near Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, to have some privacy. One pal said: “They’ve locked the doors and steamed up the windows. It’s the first time they could really get to grips with each other since the jungle.” But friends were surprised Cerys had already introduced her children Glenys, four, and Johnny, two, to Marc. One pal said: “That’s a clear sign she believes they have a future together. Marc and Cerys have been texting, e-mailing and chatting on their mobiles ever since the jungle. “But they couldn’t wait to be back together again. She never dreamed she would find love when she set off on her I’m a Celebrity adventure. But that’s exactly what’s happened.” Locals in the Sloop Inn, in nearby Porthgain, were stunned when Cerys brought Marc in just four years after she held her wedding reception there. Cerys, 38, describes the venue as her “favourite pub in the world”. Her ex-husband, American record producer Seth Riddle, helped out behind the bar in the run-up to their marriage. Cerys decided it was the perfect place to take Marc, 34, after he drove from London to stay with her. One regular said: “We couldn’t believe it when they walked in hand-in-hand. Cerys is a regular here and we’ve never seen her so happy.” Barman Nathan Eaton, 22, said: “They came in for a meal and everyone thought Cerys looked great.” After the couple fell in love in front of the cameras, former EastEnders actor Marc broke up with his long-term girlfriend Sarah Matravers, 32. Cerys divorced Seth after three years of marriage. dailystar |

Moyles and Biggins in 'b*stard' exchange Radio DJ Chris Moyles was forced to apologise to BBC Radio One listeners during his breakfast show, after I'm Celeb winner Christopher Biggins branded him a '*******'. The pair exchanged weight jibes after big-mouthed Moyles goaded the 58-year-old actor, saying: 'I see you've put all the weight back on since you left the jungle'. Biggins quickly retorted, calling the larger-than-life DJ a '*******'. Moyles, 33, then hurriedly apologised to all the mum and kids listening on the school run Metro |

JUNGLE LOVERS DRUG BUST-UP JUNGLE star Cerys Matthews was urged last night to dump lover Marc Bannerman over claims he took cocaine and hired hookers. The singer was said to be “shocked and horrified” at allegations he snorted so much coke it left him useless in bed. Mum-of-two Cerys, 38, herself a recovering addict, has had heated words with Marc over the allegations. Close pals have reminded her she has to keep away from drugs and her treatment involves staying away from users. Friends and family wanted the blonde to dump Marc before their romance – sparked when they met in telly hit I’m A Celebrity – blossomed. But the actor pleaded with her to give him another chance. The pair have been getting cosy over the past few days at a farmouse owned by Cerys’ parents near Trefin in Pembrokeshire, west Wales. A pal said: “It’s a hard situation for Cerys. Not only is she horrified that Marc would actually get a hooker – she also knows if he does drugs that could endanger her recovery. “Being clean and sober for her kids is the most important thing for Cerys and she can’t risk getting caught up with drugs again. “Her family have all told her to ditch him if the claims are true.” Former EastEnders star Marc, 34, is said to have paid for sex and coke with a £120-an-hour hooker. He also allegedly earned the nickname Double-Barrel Bannerman after shoving two straws up his nose to snort a double line of the drug. Vice girl Shann Fallon, 22, told a newspaper she met the actor and said: “Marc stripped me down to my red lace lingerie, stockings and suspenders. “But then he was happy to just sit around, chat and more than anything do some drugs. In one hour we smoked four strong joints and snorted four lines of cocaine each. “We spent a while just smooching and cuddling like a regular couple but there was no arousing him. “Marc apologised and told me he’d taken too much coke.” Cerys got hooked on heroin and booze dealing with the fame of being lead singer in 90s band Catatonia. Yesterday the she and Marc were locked in talks in a local pub. And fiery Marc has been quizzed by police after allegedly “flipping” when he saw a photographer taking pictures of the pair at another pub. Officers called at the farmhouse yesterday to investigate allegations that the snapper was assaulted and had his camera memory card taken. Spokesmen for Marc and Cerys could not be contacted for comment. Dailystar |
