JUNGLE IS TV CON Malcolm McLaren said last night he walked out of I’m A Celebrity because it was all a “fix”. The Godfather of punk, 61, threw show chiefs into crisis by quitting just hours before it hits our screens tonight. And in an explosive interview with the Daily Star, he claimed: The Aussie jungle was just “a glorified film set” and none of the celebs were ever in any danger Producers had already decided who they wanted to win The Bushtucker Trials were so harmless, the show’s medic said he would let his children take part The stars are so Z-list, chiefs offered him £350,000 to make sure they had at least one famous face. Malcolm claims that when he announced he was quitting on Saturday night, he was “bullied” and locked in his hotel room. He says show bosses even sent hosts Ant, 31, and Dec, 32, to try to talk him round – but he didn’t know who they were! There were rumours last night that the Sex Pistols boss had quit because he was scared of the creepy-crawlies. But speaking at the luxury six-star Versace Hotel on Australia’s Gold Coast, Malcolm ranted: “It’s a nonsense to say I quit over a spider. “The reality is their jungle is a glorified film set. The whole show is a circus. I was shocked to hear I was never going to be in any danger. “The medic, Dr Bob McCarron, told me: ‘Things are so safe, I would send my own kids in to do the show.’ There is nothing bad in there. They’re hoodwinking the public. “Viewers need to wake up to the fact that the celebrities are just a motley crew in ITV’s horror movie and, basically, I’m no longer interested in the script. I understand its popularity and all about the pantomime torture camp. I had every intention to appear on the show. “But when the trials are tricks to fool the public about a danger that isn’t there, it proves this show is nothing more than a circus. “I think they fix it and they know exactly who is going to win. It’s all set up. They know who’s gonna win and who’s gonna lose. “In my opinion, it’s totally and utterly fixed. This is not a reality show, it’s a fake one.” McLaren says another reason he backed out was because his lawyer said the deal had too many loopholes which might cost him his huge fee. So he never signed up. He said: “My girlfriend didn’t want me to do it, because she hates the show. But she bowed to it because of the money I was offered. “However, the contract came late and my lawyer told me not to sign. It was full of penalty clauses. I had asked for £500,000 but I was told I’d never get this. “I was amazed they said I was on the show, because I never was.” McLaren, who lives in Paris with girlfriend Young Kim, claims things then turned nasty. He said: “When I said I wasn’t signing they bullied me, they ridiculed me and they tried to humiliate me. Wherever I went people followed me. They tried to keep me locked up. It was like a prison. “In the end I ran out screaming. I ran to the beach and out of the bushes came these two guys. I thought I was gonna be mugged. “But it was these security guys ITV employ and I was taken back to the hotel in a car. “Then I had a film crew get my room key and burst in unannounced, pointing cameras at my face. This was harassment. One of the producers started shouting at me: ‘So you’re bottling out?’ “I also had Ant and Dec jump out on me at the hotel. One of them said: ‘Hey Malcolm, you should do this show. It would be great to have you.’ “And I said: ‘Who are you?’ I didn’t have a clue who they were because I have never seen the show.” McLaren had few kind words to say about the rest of the contestants. He blasted: “Bless them, I assume they are ‘once upon a time’ celebrities looking to relaunch themselves. “They seem to cast according to format. There are two wannabe soap stars, some sportsman who is down on his luck and now trying to be a chat show host if he’s got half a brain and also a glamour model who’s botoxed so much you can’t even recognise her. “I gather from friends that I was the biggest name they had. They needed a genuine celebrity. That’s why I was offered £350,000. It’s the highest fee anyone has been offered. “Now I won’t get my fee, which is fine. I don’t need the money. And ITV are paying for my flight home. But I had to settle my own hotel bill!” A furious show insider hit back: “It is laughable that Malcolm appears to have such an intimate knowledge of the jungle, yet by his own admission he has never watched the show and he has never been in camp. “The reality is there are plenty of dangers in the jungle and all the celebrities receive health and safety talks prior to their entrance because of the deadly animals which lurk. “As for Malcolm’s accusations about fixing, they are outrageous and completely untrue and an insult to the millions of viewers who enjoy the show every year. “To suggest there is an impropriety around the show is utterly false. Malcolm was never held prisoner in the luxury hotel where he enjoyed three nights at the expense of ITV. “During the period he was there, he was – like the other stars – segregated from those taking part. This is to maintain the element of surprise. “His comments about the celebrities being Z-list are insulting. We believe this year’s line up is brilliant and contains a great mix of people. “We would never have gone to the expense of flying him halfway round the world if we thought he wasn’t going to participate in the show.” Sex Pistol John Lydon, 51, who appeared on the show in 2004, also stuck the boot into his old pal. He said: “I knew he would back out. When I went on that show, that was a real challenge for me – not the wildlife, but to be surrounded by all those arseholes.” An ITV spokesperson said last night: “Malcolm has flown 5,000 miles to take part in I’m a Celebrity. “But, shortly before the celebrities were due to go into the jungle, he decided not to take part. He is now on his way home.” Dailystar |

Star quits reality show over snake threat Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren has pulled out of a British reality TV show before it starts filming in Australia after being told seven of the world's most venomous snakes live near the set. The ageing punk rocker is the first contestant of I'm A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here to leave the show before it starts. "At the age of 61, he was intimidated by the physical challenges," an unnamed source from television channel ITV told The Mail on Sunday. "He just lost his bottle." Stuff/co.NZ |

I'm a Celebrity - Ant and Dec say Malcolm McLaren was scared Malcolm McLaren bottled out of appearing on I'm a Celebrity … Get Out of Here, Ant and Dec have claimed. The ex-Sex Pistols manager was due to be one of the original jungle buddies on the current series, but jetted all the way to Australia before changing his mind. And according to the Daily Mirror, pint-sized presenting duo Ant and Dec think it was because he was frightened of the legendary Bushtucker Trials. "He changed his mind after seeing the medic, who briefed him on everything in the jungle. The medic tells you what to look out for and what is poisonous," Ant said. "Odd that he changed his mind after that." However, Dec added that Malcolm's non-appearance on the show had not affected the ratings at all, especially as the other campers are providing so much entertainment. He particularly noted the intrigue surrounding Marc Bannerman and Cerys Matthews' blossoming friendship, which came to an abrupt halt when he was the first contestant booted out of the jungle. Marc left camp to discover that his girlfriend Sarah Matravers had fled Australia as she was too upset to confront him upon his exit. myparkmag |
