Dannii Minogue exclusive

XCLUSIVE: DANNII..I'M SINGLE & SO HAPPY
By Adam Lee-Potter 02/12/2007

Dannii Minogue has long lived in big sister Kylie's shadow. But now, after carving out her niche as the caring, sharing sex-bomb on the X-Factor panel, she is A-list in her own right. And she's relishing every second.

"I'm quite fluttery with happiness," she coos, patting my knee. "I've finally been accepted as me. It's a fantastic opportunity, for once, not to be compared with Kylie. At last, I've found my own slot."

Dannii was chosen to join the panel by Simon Cowell. When he saw footage of the singer as a judge on his TV spin-off, Australia's Got Talent, he was hooked. "I want that girl for X Factor," he said. What Simon wants, he mostly gets.

Dannii, a performer since she was seven, is nothing if not a pro. She flirts with Cowell: "He's just the most charismatic man I've ever met," she goads Sharon: "Maybe it's because I'm younger and prettier," and she teases "Lulu" Louis Walsh: "He doesn't fancy me. Oh I wonder why?"

But Dannii is no fluff. She is poised to win the contest, mentoring her remaining acts - hot favourite Rhydian and dark horse Leon - with maternalistic steel.

"They've got a great chance of winning," she says, bouncing up and down. "Last week was incredibly emotional, I was in tears. This show really knows how to pull at your heart strings.

"Rhydian was hated by a lot of people at the start and that hurt him. He asked, 'What can I do?' I said, 'This will pass. You need time for people to get to know you.' I understood that, I've been there.

"But it's nerve-racking for us all. Life doesn't get any more frightening than sat on that panel. I look at the other three thinking, 'You're a lot braver than I thought.' With the audience around you, it's like being a gladiator."

She adds with a cackle: "It would be so great to win. I most want to beat Louis. When Simon says girl judges are the cattiest, he means Lulu. He even said Kylie can't sing. That was unforgivable.

"As for Sharon, you don't click with everybody. But it's her choice not to be friends. Apparently she's envious because I'm younger and prettier."

But, for all her bluster, there is a vulnerability. The Minogue sisters have, unlike the song, been far from lucky in love.

Kylie's been dumped or led up the garden path by a succession of rats.

Dannii's marriage to Nip/Tuck actor Julian McMahon ended after a year when she caught him cheating with a teenage pin-up.

Her engagement to racing driver Jacques Villeneuve petered out because he, apparently, preferred computer games.

Both sisters are single and Dannii admits they've become even closer as a family since Kylie's battle back to health following cancer.

"We have girly chats all the time. But I'm not sure if we give each other good advice. We're both still single, after all. I've been on my own for over a year. I do go on dates but I can't remember the last time a man bought me jewellery so I must be doing something wrong."

She is almost surprisingly stunning, all curves and pout - a real life Jessica Rabbit. And she's clearly not been short of offers. "David Walliams is too flirty, he flirts with men and women. He's either trying to double his chances or he's a faux-mosexual.

"Russell Brand was keen but he's a playboy and so not my type. A fellow who calls his ***** a winkle is never going to do it for me. I prefer clean-cut, stable men. I don't mind if they're older, but they've got to make me laugh."

Throw in some high-waisted trousers and it sounds spookily like an identikit of Simon Cowell. She laughs nervously and pats my knee again - a device she has clearly used often in a bid to win over male journalists. I feel like a dog who's been thrown one too many stale biscuits.

"Simon is fun, fanciable and a great boss. He could flirt with a wall. He's not single and I don't fancy him. But that doesn't stop the gossip. And Simon thinks it's good business. In any case, I fancy nerdy guys. And Simon's no nerd. The man I really fancy is Ian Hislop."

Crikey. Cowell won't like that, bested by a portly, middle-aged journalist. Simon has described her as "mysterious and sexy," adding: "She doesn't know how sexy she is."

Dannii - whose new single, Touch Me Like That, is out tomorrow - hums and haws. "I don't walk around thinking I'm sexy, no. I'm dead daggy at home."

The notion that Dannii Minogue doesn't know the value of her sex appeal is about as credible as her insistence she doesn't use botox. Her 36-year-old forehead is implausibly immaculate. She looks terrific. And she knows it.

She totters on red killer heels and, when she's not patting my knee or pleading in a little girl voice for a top-up of Diet Coke, she just about makes sure she doesn't fall out of the tight frock she calls her "full regalia". She is all about sex appeal.

This is the woman who, after all, when her marriage collapsed, posed nude for Playboy. She prickles when tackled over pictures which emerged last year of her fondling a girl stripper. "I'm entirely straight - it was just a bit of fun," she says.

The sisters' brother Brendan, a cameraman, recently had a baby boy. But unlike Kylie - Dannii is anything but broody. "I just don't know if I want it for me - children. Without a chap, it never is going to happen. And I'd be OK with that."

Maybe. But she looks tiny and forlorn as she heads home to watch I'm A Celebrity with her two cats. Dannii Minogue has left the building.

Dannii's new single, Touch Me Like That, is released tomorrow. X Factor is on ITV1 on Saturdays at 6.30pm and 8.45pm.
